Transmission Advice Wanted

My '95 automatic has been acting funny.
The other day, long trip on the turnpike at about 70mph, it dropped out of overdrive and stayed in 3rd. Next exit I checked the fluid. No smell of burnt and the color was right, but it was reading cold level, so a little low.
I put a quart of fluid in and it shifted to OD for about 5 miles then fell back out. Got off the highway in a few more miles and got to our destination soon.
Next day, it ran ok. End of the weekend, long highway drive home and it ran perfect. So I thought maybe the trans had overheated and now that it was at proper fluid levels and cooled off, it was right.

Then tonight, it did it again, popped out of OD for a few highway miles. Not after many miles like the last time though. It went back into OD a few miles later.

I'm planning to change the fluid and clean the filter next week. What else do I need to do or have done?

Maybe have a flush done to make sure the cooler's not plugged.
 
I'm going to change the filter and fluid tonite.
Driving on the highway this weekend, it popped out of OD again, and then would randomly go back in. Seemed like as long I was on flat ground it would stay in, but if I sped up to pass or came to a hill it would fall back out and stay out.
Then, driving at about 60 in 3rd gear it started to slip, or at least I noticed it for the first time. Now the fluid is brown and starting to smell burnt. I stopped, and checked levels and smell, took a short break and got back on the road. I didn't notice slipping the rest of the way home.

Advice from a mechanic friend was to change the fluid and filter, and pray. Then take it to a shop to have it checked out if it continued to slip.

Comments? Ideas?
I will check the cooler too. Think I should just blow it out with shop air?
 
i just replaced all my solenoids with a kit and the whole kit was approx $150-175. It is not a dealer only item. Even after I replaced them I could not get OD to work. After much investigation it turned out my ECU was bad. Swapped that and now OD works perfectly.

Running the risk of jinxing my truck.....

My transmission is running great now.
I changed all three shift solenoids, it was easy.
When I filled the trans again, I added a bottle of Lucas Transmission Repair, AKA - Stop Slip. It went in like honey and clogged the filler tube for a time. So the second half of the bottle, I mixed it with Pennzoil Dex iii trans fluid. It took about 15 miles of driving for the shifting to start feeling normal. Then took it on a long highway drive and it ran like the day I bought it.
