Transmission Capacity

I just did a transmission fluid change the other week and put in the recommended "2.2 qrts".

Since then I have developed an issue. If I brake hard to stop and then accelerate from a stop it takes a second to down shift into first gear.

The dip stick is reading a low... and it sure looked like a lot more then 2.2 qrts came out.

Any ideas? It feels like I need to add more fluid... but I don't want to over fill.

Thanks for your help.

The manual isn't correct for whatever reason. Most of us (if not all) put in ~4 qts for just a drain and fill. If you dropped the pan/changed the filter, it takes more like 6.

You can't use any of the Toyota stated capacities for doing fluids, sadly.

You need to warm up the tranny (by driving), then park on a flat surface. With the engine still running, move the gear selector through all the gears, pausing at each one. All the way down to low and then back. Then, get out and pull the dipstick. Add as necessary. It should be towards or at the top of the HOT hash marks checking it this way.

You can pop a funnel in the dipstick tube and fill right then while it's running if you want. But you'll have to do the gear selector dance before checking the level again, to ensure the fluid is distributed.

(ninja'd by Brian...he had a shorter post...I guess I need to learn to type faster :0)

Automatic... sorry, thought I had mentioned this.

I did just a drain and fill but I let it drain dry.

I'll pick up another qrt. just to be safe.

I was talking about automatics.
