If you had the choice in your 4th gen or below, would you have an automatic transmission or a 5 spd?

I prefer manual trannies most of the time, but I guess I like having a slushbox in my '05 4Runner.
My '02 Sentra has a five-speed stick and I drive commerical vehicles (big diesel trucks) for a living. They have 7 speeds and sometimes I drive a tractor-trailer that has 10 speeds. By the end of the day, your left leg has gotten quite a workout and it is nice to "cruise" home in an auto-shift vehicle.

Now, if I were in an office all day long, it would be a no-brainer. Stick shift all the way!!!!

I own an Auto, I voted Manual. The 3.0 auto drives me crazy going up mountian passes and stuff like that, now I wish I had bought a 5-speed!!!
Had a buddy who had one of the only manual transmissions ever put into a Land Rover Disco "97". After driving that beast a few times.....Automatic for me. Down along the coast of NC, where I use to live "when I was cool, but poor", the only rigs I ever saw to get stuck in the sand were manuals, because people would pop the clutch and would instantly dig down into the sand. And that smell! Good God! A burning clutch stinks worse than anything!

I already own a sports car that's a 6-speed manual, so it's nice to have a truck with an auto.
Otherwise, I would've voted for the manual!

auto no question. this is a commuter car not a sports vehicle.
Sports vehicle or not, I just prefer driving manual. I don't race my vehicle or anything, I just find it more comfortable. When I drive automatic, I feel that I have to pay more attention to make sure my right hand does move the shift lever and my left leg doesn't involuntarily reach for the non existent clutch...haha

Make no mistake. My Runner is a DD work horse. I'd put up with a little left leg cramp to gain complet control,especialy in the winter. Most of the time I drive around with all the silly traction/abs, etc turned off. Next time before you roll up to a stop, slip the trans into neutral and you can feel how much easier it is to stop with out the engine still pulling. No wonder Auto's are so hard on brakes. Mind you, if I had to deal with 2-3 hours of rush hour commutes each day.
