I've had the same issue with the clunk, here's a little food for thought. many Ford trucks have this same issue (as stated earlier in this post) but I told this story to a friend with a chevy pickup and he was having the same problem he took it into the dealer and they admitted having the same problem with their driveshafts. not sure exactly what they did but $400 dollars later his clunk is gone. I just got my Ford grease in the mail. I'll let you know how it works out

Let me know if the Ford XG-8 grease solves the problem for you. I still get a mild clunk sometimes but nothing like before where it sometimes felt like somebody hit me from behind. They key to this working for me was taking the slip yoke off the driveshaft, cleaning it up really good, greasing the female splines on the slip yoke and male splines on the driveshaft with the special Ford grease and then reassembling it. Good Luck!
finally got around to doing the slip joint, got a tube cleaner assortment from harbor freight for a few bucks and a couple of cans of brake cleaner. once the splines were cleaned up they looked remarkably good, after 15k miles of clunking you would have thought something would be worn out or broken. bought my grease off of Amazon so I didnt have to make a trip to the ford dealer (probably got it cheaper as well. no If I can only get rid of that pesky rear suspension sway
almost forgot, there was no clunk when I bought my runner, sometime early on I greased the drive shaft with regular general purpose grease, at some point the clunk started, dont remember if it was right after. the grease that came out of the spline was a mixture of blue and regular grease, I think I shot myself in the foot when I greased it with regular grease.

My 5 speed has a lot of take-up/clunks like that as well.

How's it doing now after you cleaned up the slip yoke and greased it with the Ford grease? I still get a slight clunk but nothing like it was before.

My clunk is gone and all it took was a 3" lift lol! I actually bought the ford grease but never got around to it. I haven't noticed a single clunk since I did the lift.
I'd be interested in knowing the measurement from hub to rear finder of everyone who had the clunk. Mine was 19.5 before the lift.

This is awesome. I thought i might be imagining my clunk in my tacoma...like, "has that always been there and now I am noticing it because the 4runner doesn't do it?" But I believe it developed over the past year, probably didn't help that my tacoma sat for 7 months at the dealer waiting for a frame...who knows.
I will have to watch the videos and tune in. This was a great read. I thought the other day that it might be my rear drums....also thought i might have something loose in the drive shaft...Good to know my instincts were pointing me in the right direction.

I recently purchased a 2002 4runner and I am having a similar issue. From 1st to 2nd I get a jerk and sometimes from 2nd to 3rd. I feel it especially on the highway in stop and go traffic. Sometimes I will step on the gas and it will immediately shift into second without going through the rpm range. Im not sure what it could be. Thanks in advance for any help.

My guess is when you lifted it, it has stretched the drive shaft out to a different position causing it to stop. mine is doing well so far no sign of the clunk since cleaning and greasing with the ford grease

Yah possibly. I was thinking more along the lines that the new drive line angle helped relieve the binding that was causing the clunk. Which is why I was curious about people's ride height. I was wondering if this problem was more common with sagging rear suspension.
