Transmission clunks and finally goes into gear

The other night I was parked on a downhill slant and after 2 hours when I went to put in into reverse it wouldnt go. I put it in drive and it wouldn't engage ethir. After repeating this a few times I shifted to 4low and reved to about 3,000 rpms before I shot backwards. I have 183,000 miles on my 96 and it is an automatic. Any ideas?

I might be jumping the gun but sounds like a trans rebuild is in your near future
