Transmission Comes out of Gear at Stop

2000 6cyl auto limited 150k. Thing seems to drive fine but when I come to a stop it sometimes comes out of gear. I have to play around taking it in and out of gear for a while and it will "pop" back in. When I say pop it sometimes kicks back in hard.

Any ideas what could be wrong here? I'd say the tranny is starting to go but it seems just fine when shifting and all once she's in gear. Very strange. Thanks!

Also, I have 3in suspension and 1in body lift. I thought maybe there was something "off" because of the body lift but it has been on the 4runner for quite some time with no issues. Also, the jolting back into gear makes it seem ever weirder.
 
Ah ha, check engine light just came on, hopefully its related and is telling when the codes are read. I just took the thing on a little local trail ride, tranny isnt slipping at all. This is so weird.

I would re-adjust the trans shifter level and nut under the vehicle. During the BL install you would have loosened the nut to relieve stress, probably placing it in N or P, then tightened it down. I would repeat this process now as a double check, re-adjust.

Also have you replaced your shifter bushings? It could be a combination of both.
 
Thanks for the help everyone, got the code read at Advanced Auto today and its P0773 bad solenoid. Issue is the guy at the store said he didn't know which one to order. Said his system had several ranging from 100 - 700 bucks!

Anyone got a link to the right solenoid I should be looking for? Thanks again.
 
If it was me I would go with Toyota parts. I know they are much more but those kits just seem way too cheap. Check out Camelback Toyota or another dealer near you that gives the online discount.

Yeah guess you can't go wrong with the direct from Toyota parts. Dam they are expensive for those little things though. I ended up going with Cascade. Company has great reviews and has been around a long time it seems. We'll see how it goes!

I did not. I did check the shifter and it's pretty darn loose, guess I just got used to it after a while and didn't notice it. Probably the bushing as he mentioned. I don't see how the linkage could cause the check engine code though?
 
Just a quick update to the post. I had the Cascade solenoids put in, tranny flushed, etc. Check engine light is off and we're shifting smooth. It does seem to shift and go into gear way smoother. I know the Cascade package seemed unbelievably cheap but it didn't seem like junk to me, shipping was also on par. Time will tell I guess.

Also, for the record, the one stock solenoid was SHATTERED! I can't believe the tranny even functioned at all, let alone functioning quite well. Hope this helps others. Thanks for the replies.
 
Light back on again

Well, I'm not out of the woods. After over a week or so now and the light is back on again. This time the code is p0770 instead of p0773. Anyone know what the differences in the codes are by chance? Thanks!

P0770; neighborhood E electrical open\short shift solenoid valve so circuit

P0773 shift solenoid e electrical old\short in circuit ,shift solenoid valve sl, ecm
P 0770. Lockup does not occur when driving 50mph. To test the solenoid you 'll have to take it off the valve body and test it with air and see if it is blocked or stuck.
P9773 the shift solenoid is turned on or off by the ecm to control hydraulic pressure via the lockup relay valve, if the ecm detects a malfunction it turns the solenoid off.
 
You bought cascade solenoid kit. I wouldev gone with oem you can check the resistance at the ecm terminal resistance should be 11-15 ohms at 68degrees.
But if I was you I'll cut my Losses and go with oem.
 
eeekkk... so I just dropped the pan again and the new fluid looks like mud! I'm aware of the strawberry milkshake but is there also a chocolate milkshake condition? The coolant level is good and is green and clean, I actually just flushed the radiator a few months ago.

Does it also have a burnt smell too. friction in the tranny equals heat which in turn turns the fluid brown.
