Transmission compatibility

Hey guys so i have been doing some research, and I'm planning on doing a 4WD conversion. please this isn't a post about asking for advice on if i should actually do it, I've already made up my mind about it..... anyways.....I know the 4WD trans is an A340f but what i found while doing research is that Toyota implemented this transmission from 1988-2003 so my question is, could i possibly use a 4WD transmission from say like a 2nd gen and it would work? or does it have to be from a 3rd gen for it to work properly. in theory it seems like it would work but i don't know much about fitment with mounts and whatnot. advice would be appreciated, thanks guys!

Well the mounts w/b different since the engines were all different in that year range. From what i remember, you'd better search some more on here btw, you pretty much have to stick to the same year or maybe a 99 if trying to put on an '00, others won't work cuz of cpu electronics differences, but i guess you could replace all that too? :cowboy:

HOOOOLY shit I'm sorry bud i didn't see this... thank for the reply, so after a lot of research I've decided its best to just take one from my year (2000) i now have a new question that if you or anyone on this forum could help with would be awesome, but if i were to use an auto trans from a 2000 V6 and put my bell housing on the V6 transmission would it fit? or do i HAVE to ABSOLUTELY get one designed to fit on a 2.7l? I'm just asking to know if the input shaft is too long on the V6 trans compare to the 2.7l. thanks!!! again sorry for the late reply.

Not trying to change your mind but you have your work cut out because you have the 2.7. I am not really sure if they changed over to drive by wire for the 2000 2.7, I know it was done for the 3.4 and that makes it difficult to use the earlier years. You will need to do some research. There are no 2.7 for 01-02 so you can't use those, and most important the 2.7 does not play nice with the 3.4. The engine is longer so all the transmission mounts and driveshafts are different. If I was going to do it I would look for a donor car that was a 2000 4wd auto 2.7 or you might get lucky and find a 2000 4wd 5speed 2.7

Yeah actually it's less rare to find a 4wd 2.7l 5speed. And that's what I figured about the engines being longer and such. Thank you.

Look for a donor locally that has been totaled, or look in the rust belt for a running donor with a rusted out frame. The best thing about a donor vehicle is that every single part that you need for the swap is on the vehicle. If you are really lucky you will find one with 4.56 gearing and a locker. Look for axle code A05A

Do you think I could put an 04 sequoia trans in my o1 4runner?? If i switched the bell housing and shift lever?? They are the same trans i think.
