IMO tranny coolers are one of the best Mods one can do. Especially if you will in a hot climate, tow anything (even light loads), or drive in hills/mountains.
I've owned two 4Runners in the past 8 years: an '88 Limited 4WD 3.4 V-6 and our current '03 Limited V-8 AWD. Both have been used extensively to tow my track car. The car and trailer weigh ~4,000#, and I've probably towed for close to 40K miles with these two vehicles. My towing has included blistering heat and mountainous terrain.
Neither 'Runner has had any aftermarket engine or tranny oil cooler added. I've never seen my ATF overheat light illuminate and have never had any hint of a problem with either vehicle. The only "nonstandard" thing I've done was to flush the '98's tranny at c. 30K miles and replace the original ATF with Mobil 1 synthetic.
When I sold the '98, it had 75 K miles on the odo and the tranny still performed like new. My '03 still performs like new at 55K miles, and I'm confidently looking forward to driving it at double that mileage.
I think 4Runners are extremely robust vehicles that have no need for add-on transmission coolers, even when the vehicle is being used hard, as mine have been. Good luck with yours.

While I do agree with you that the trannies on the 4Runners are definitely above par, all it takes is one transmission failure and you are wishing you had that little $100 box in front of the radiator. For me, since I occasionally (8-10 times a year) tow a 4200 lb boat with a full load of passengers, the extra protection was worth the cost... I had one car (many years ago) blow the tranny while towing, and losing a week of productivity and vacation time, then having to spend $1500 to rebuild the tranny was enough for me.
I think getting a cooler depends on a couple of factors... 1) How much heavy driving do you do? (i.e. towing, stop and go in heavy traffic, rock climbing, etc) 2) What is the life expectancy of your vehicle? (the longer you expect to have it, the more potential for long term damage) 3) What is your risk tolerance?
If we're talking about a mall queen and no towing, I doubt you'll ever need a tranny cooler. Seeing as you do some 4-wheeling (congrats on truck of the month BTW), I'd recommend it.
