Transmission Delayed Engagement

Did the engagement eventually fix?

Replying to an old comment here but yeah it has never done it since. I also have never gone through that type of carwash again. Must be that water gets somewhere it shouldn't and if you don't get it dried off you end up with the rust described above that take some force to break loose.

Get Toyota to give you a brand new transmission under warantee.:frisky:

2005 SR5 V6 (no off road) 150,000 miles. Still shifts like when I bought it brand new. no slip. No hesitation.

My wife has a 2013 4Runner, 2WD Limited that's been experiencing a delayed engagement when shifting from Park or Reverse to Drive.

I've been experiencing this problem myself with my 2011 SR5 4WD with 108,000 miles. I'd back out of the driveway and shift from reverse to drive and nothing, Indicator on dash clearly displayed "D". I wait 5 to 10 seconds and bang it engages. Have to say that I was pretty concerned after reading all the posts with possible problems.

A few weeks back I replaced the Neutral Safety switch. I climbed back underneath the 4runner with a flashlight and socket wrench and readjusted the switch. There is a straight line etched into the switch body. I put the shifter in neutral (block the wheels and engage parking brake) loosen the top switch mounting bolt and rotate the switch until the flats on the shaft are inline with the line on switch body. tightened the bolt to spec. Went for a test ride and it's shifting like butter again.

Apparently this switch does more than prevent the starter from engaging when not in park.

On my 12 SR5 the neutral safety switch had become corroded causing excessive force to move the shifter and may have stretched the shift cable enough to cause the same problem. it never did it until that happened. I replaced the switch and restored smooth shifting but the delay is there unles you pull the shifter into drive quickly, I believe it to be the cable slightly stretched. I will probably replace the cable.
I had rebuilt a new scion XB a couple years ago that was hit in the front and the radiator support damaged the neutral safety switch causing the shifter to be forced to move. when I bought it you couldn't even move the shifter. im sure the owner or someone else was trying to force it and stretched the cable. I put a new safety switch in and had to replace the cable. it worked perfectly after that. I don't think it takes much for the cable to affect the shifting into the positions.

Mine has the shift delay from day1. When shift P->D the vehicle moves forward a little if you don't hold break paddle tightly. I'm getting used to it and always wait a second then release the break and go.

Is the delay worse when in reverse?

Sounds like the pump is going out in your transmission. If so the delay will be worse in reverse as it requires higher pressure to engage reverse.

Curious if this solved your problem long term? I am in this exact scenario right now, but haven’t had a chance to climb under yet.

2017 SR5 4wd, parked in my garage on flat surface. I start motor and shift into reverse and it won't move. I shift into drive and it doesn't move. I shift it into reverse and rev the motor and it clunks into reverse and goes and works normally after that. This only happened once so far but is concerning. Are others experiencing these symptoms?

Traditionally this indicates the pump in the transmission is going out. It will be worse in reverse as that requires more pressure to engage than forward gears (drive). It will also worsen in colder (below freezing) weather.
