Transmission Diagnosis Question

Problem: Past two-three days when I first start it up and try to put it in drive and give it gas nothing happens. I idle and have to put in reverse then back into drive and then it "pops" into gear.

Vehicle HX: 98 Limited 4x4 165K

I have a limited background in this area so I am soliciting advice before I take it to the shop. Thanks.

It was a dark red/ brown color and at the cold marking on the stick. From my reading I will at least need to change the transmission fluid but from the shifting problems I believe that more work may be needed.

I would go with a fluid change it should be a clear red. It may be clogging the filter and this is why it is shifting that way. I would take it in and have them do a fluid and filter change. Don't tell them you are having problems. This may solve your issues without paying for needless repairs.

I checked around and I got quotes from $75-$108 plus tax. They stated that the 98 doesn't have a filter more of a metal screen and they would perform a transmission flush.

Should I be prepared for any other possible problems. Thanks-

With mileage that high I would not do a fluid flush. I would go with a fluid change. I have heard of transmissions failing with high mileage after a flush. Also put a quart of Lucas additive in there too.
