Transmission Emergency

I’m pretty much in panic mode at this point...started doing the transmission fluid exchange after having to replace my cooler lines. So I have 2006 v6 with 4wd. I noticed my fill plugs are in different areas then the write up and there seems to be one for main drive shaft and front shaft. I emptied the pan and less than a quart came out. I pumped in about the same amount until it started coming back out the full plug. Ran the engine through the gears a couple times and drained out the cooler line but each time only 1/4 of a quart comes gurgling out. I just need some guidance at this point pretty nervous about what the hell is going on. I’m not getting the typically three quarts coming out anywhere...any ideas?

Are you sure you are not draining the transfer case or something? The fill plug should be on passenger side of the tranny about 3/4 of the way back. The transfer case is on the back of the tranny with the plugs facing towards the back. Fluid should not come out the transmission fill plug....

It's also possible you were super low to start with, so by doing 1:1 ratios your still just low.
 
Not trying to be rude, but if you are having trouble just locating the proper drain and fill plugs, you might just want to pay someone to do the flush for you. $250 and some pride is a lot cheaper then $2500 or whatever the hell a transmission would cost you.
 
Ask your neighbor. I'm sure you will find that one out of three can answer this within 1 min of looking at the truck.

Take my parents neighborhood. Nice area. No one on the block probably does the work themselves. Plenty of folks actually know a decent bit about car maintenance but you wouldn't know it if you never asked.
 
Hmmm....I did my drain/fill through the cooler lines so I never cracked the pan, drain, or fill plugs open. How much fluid did you lose with the cooler line swap? I'm guessing only a few ounces.

I'm leaning toward the "you were low already" school like some others. A drain/fill including dropping the pan and replacing the filter is only 3 quarts. Only getting one out might not be out of the realm of possibilities.

However, once you started talking about front shaft and rear shaft it sure sounds like you're poking around the transfer case and not the transmission. Yeah, these trucks don't have a divorced case like some vehicles so it looks sort of like one big assembly, but they're very different. If the stuff you drained isn't red or maybe very dirty red...there's a problem (you drained the t-case).
 
Wow I feel goofy should probably deactivate my account after that...I found it no problem. Well worth it, my fluid was practically the color of oil. 114k on the truck and I was also quite low. What a difference should be good to go for a while. Thanks again for all the help!

DO NOT deactivate your account, with your new found knowledge you will now be able to help others here in the future with similar issues, this is how we all sometimes learn what we don't know!!!
 
I'm joking wouldn't actually deactivate just be a little more patient before seeking help in the future. What threw me for a loop was following the taco transmission flush DIY write-up. The fill plug in the picture seemed to be located closer to the rear driveshaft, on our trucks that's more or less where the transfer case is...I didn't see the "WS" and for whatever reason(doh moment) thought maybe its because I have 4wd and not solely rear wheel drive. In addition, I was rushing myself and really didn't give enough time to look for the fill plug it is somewhat obstructed by the exhaust. Anyway about two seconds after posting I took a second look around and sure enough found the fill plug. Nothing was done to the transfer case. What was concerning was the lack of fluid which drained from my transmission pan and the color...it pretty much looked like gear oil. Anyway great thanks to all the info on this site and the help people provide. Saved me a ton of money.
 
Kind of a general question related to the fluid replacement...I initially had no idea how much fluid was in the transmission system because I'm uncertain for how long it had been leaking. That being said I flushed out all the old and replaced exactly 11.5 of fresh. When I went through the temperature check and opened the overflow valve I empited roughly 1-2 quarts until it trickled. That being said the truck and shifting runs/seems fine. I was just surprised how much "extra" came out. Anyone experience similar circumstances?
 
That sounds about right. It takes 10.9 quarts of WS fluid according to the Prodemand printout I got from the Yota dealer.
