Transmission Failure

I bought this 2002 SR5 4Runner, 2 wheel drive, with 79000 miles last October. It has been a good truck until last week. As I was pulling away from a stop lite I noticed the transmission slipping and the rpm's climbing. I had the transmission serviced in July (fluid changed) and oil changed at 85000. It now has 86000 and change. The trans fluid is black and has a burnt smell. The transmission is making noise. I've called several transmission shops and the average quote is appx $3000. Is this a good figure for a rebuild?

I wouldnt waste your time rebuilding an automatic transmission.

I would just go to Fermans over in Santa Ana and find a matching replacement

I don't think that is a good price. I believe you can get a fully built performance transmission from IPT for just a little more than that. I agree with COB on finding one local. I would also try to find out why it might have gone bad.

Might want to find out why it fried with so few miles on it also.

Its often said that changing the transmission fluid can cause transmission failure. Maybe it was coincidence, or this statement is actually true. I haven't had much first hand experience, but I have heard it from friends who are mechanics.

I've heard it said about flushing a transmission but not a drain and fill. Which of the two the OP had performed, I don't know. Maybe the shop didn't put the correct ATF in :shrug:

Edward, do you have the receipt of work done? Does it say what kind of ATF was put in?

I want to thank all the people who responded to my thread about this problem. It sure pays to be a member of this forum. So here's the plan. Ferman's in Santa Ana will gbet the work. Less money...maybe not the best decision but money is tight and as you can see I don't drive many miles per year....@ Brandon, thanks for the offer....if Ferman's doesn't work out I might call you....either way it wouldn't be a bad idea....the color of the fluid was black with a burnt smell and I pulled the receipt and it didn't indicate the brand of transmission fluid used.

If you have burnt, black fluid and a failed tranny 1000 miles after a flush and fluid change, I'd go back to that shop and get their insurance involved. That's no coincidence IMO.

Jeez, I didn't pick up that point... Yeah, no way the fluid should be burnt after 1k miles.

If nothing else, the shop should service it for you again for free just to prevent liability if they did something wrong.

What did the fluid look like before the service? The previous owner may have towed with it, and the fresh fluid just broke some crud loose. A simple fluid change only replaces a fraction of the total.

A shop would likely have done a flush, not a drain/fill. The invoice for the service should say how much fluid was used, even if it doesn't state what fluid was used, as they need to bill you for it. If it's more than 5L/qts. then they likely flushed it.
