Transmission Fluid Change ?'s

Well its time for me to change the transmission fluid. Every fluid has been changed recently, but the transmission. I plan on doing the method where I remove the cooler line and put it in a bucket to replace all the fluid. What is the best fluid to use on my transmission with 180k on it and Toyota fluid has only been used in it? I am thinking to just stick with the Toyota fluid. Also, how much would I need to do a full flush?

I use mobil 1 ATF. I've had good experiences with it and I've read some great things about it. It holds up to the abuse much better than most other ATF's out there. I can't remember off hand how many quarts a full flush took, but its quite a bit.

Toyota fluid probably means whatever cheap Dex III they get their hands on. I would use Dex VI or Mobil 1 ATF as stated above ^ or Valvoline Maxlife.

Ive used the valvoline maxlife in the red bottle for years in many vehicles and never had a problem with it. Just changed it in my 96 actually and it shifts great. I like to do a bottle of the thick lucas, (not the think conditioner) when i change the fluid as well.

I'm a fan of drain & fills myself. I did 3 since I got the truck as I don't think it had ever been done before, and I'll be doing it once a year going forward.

I would always drop the pan regardless, if nothing else just to see what condition the trans is in by checking the magnets in the bottom of the pan.

I would also drain it completely and change the fluid to fully synthetic be it Redline D4 or Amsoil.
A full flush will take about 13qts however you will need probably about 2 more on top of that to make sure depending on how the ATF fluid looks that is in it now it can be hard to tell where the good new fluid starts and the old fluid ends as you are taking out a qt at a time in the bucket.

Since Audi is part of your username, I'll 2nd the Mobil1 suggestion. That's what I used when changing fluid/filter in my '02 S6 Avant, along with a 10oz bottle of Lubeguard.
YMMV.
