transmission fluid level

As embarrassing as this is to ask- How do you read the dip stick for the transmission fluid level.

The stick on my 98 4x4 has a cold level with min/max notches and a hot level with min/max notches. What I need to know is are these levels static or with the motor running.

I have the owners manual but cannot seem to find the proper way to check the level.

drive the 4r around make sure the tranny fluid is warm. park on level service make sure the engine stays running. cycle transmission from p to 1st and back to park. keep engine running. no go check the dip stick the normal way and check the warm level.

Thanks for the info. It seemed logical that it would be checked with the motor running.

I found it strange that the owners manual tells you how to check all fluid levels except the transmission.

I drained the fluid and pulled the pan and while I was cleaning the pan I noticed a river of fluid running down the drive way. The 2 quart drain and refill turned into a little over 5 quarts.

That depends. If you are checking cold, use the cold marks, If hot, up to operating temp use the hot marks. Just remember, that the engine gets up to operating temp way before the transmission does. As long as it is between the min/max marks depending on temp, you are good to go. And always check the fluid level with engine running, in park, and on level ground.

Any ways to make sure that transmission gets up to operating temp?
I've changed atf two days ago and now level on dipstick is slightly lower then min cold mark after some smooth driving. It's rather cold on street, about 33F. I'd like to think that cold weather is reason and atf get cold quickly.
Anyway i'm going to buy quart of atf to level up one to max cold level.
What do you think about it?

Sorry to drag up such an old post, but this was the best one I could find that was related to my question. Does anyone know how much fluid to add if the dipstick shows it's at the cold full line when the transmission is hot?

usually its 1pint... but since this is a dipstick trans & not a sealed one, its very easy to just creep up on it, add about 1 cup at a time & recheck. & be sure youre checking while fully warmed up & in park on a level surface. & fully warmed up means drive for 15-20 minutes, not just warm on the coolant temp gauge.

I have watched a few videos on this and the level that states cold, you should read when the engine is cold and the level should be between those two notches. Then start and run the engine up to operating temperature and with the engine running check again and it should now read between those two notches for the hot reading. Hope this helps.

If the tranny is hot and your engine is running I would just add a little at a time 3 ounces maybe then check level again until you get it up between the two hot reading notches.
