Transmission Flush & Fuel Filter Help

So a buddy is getting ready to do my 60k for me on my 04 SE V6 this Thursday and asked if I needed a fuel filter change as well. I didn't get it done at 30k, so do I need it now?

Also, do I need to have him do a transmission flush or a simple drain and fill? I got the type IV tranny fluid from the dealer this morning and told him I was having a complete flush done and he sold me 16 quarts (at $8.75 per quart). Did I really need that much??? Am I an IDIOT??? HELP!:awais:

The only fuel filter I know of is in the tank, I may be wrong. As far as 16 quarts goes, maybe. I can't imagine needing less than 13 if you're going to flush it to clean fluid... :cheers:

4 - 4.5qts I think. If it were me I'd consider pulling the cooled oil return line right in front of the front crossmember and aiming it into the drain pan. Reinstall the plug and put 4qts in. Next I'd have my buddy start it and let the fluid shoot out of the cooler line into the drain pan. Once the flow reduces and it starts gurgling shut it off and put another 4 qts in. Start it again, just before the flow begins to reduce and it starts to gurgle you should see the color of the discharge oil becoming pretty & pink. Shut it off, re-secure the line and refill the transmission. Make sure you move the shifter and allow the gears to engage momentarily prior to taking your final reading.

*NOTE* You may have to progress to the 3rd fill cycle to get the clean fluid discharging.

The other easy way to get a complete flush would be to drain the transmission for the next 3 oil changes and refill it. That won't provide 100% new fluid but close. If you DIY oil changes it's easy enough...

If you're hell bent on returning some of that expensive fluid then I would buy 4 or 5 quarts and do it every 20k or so. If you're not doing very aggresive towing that should keep you out of trouble.

All of my recommendations are based on my preference to excessively maintain transmissions. That preference is based on how expensive they are AND how incredibly reliable/durable they are when kept full of FRESH fluid. Good luck!
