transmission issue

Hey guys, brand new to this forum and like it alot! quick question. driving home last night in my wifes 2000 4runner v6 i noticed that when coming up to speed on the high way there would be a stutter between 3rd and 4th gear when the car was shifting either up or down. It is an automatic transmission and it was actually just rebuilt about this time last year. i was not able to check any the fluid last night because of the hurricane/storm was still blowing things all over and we didnt have power in my house. My wife was able to make it to work today fine so i am headed over in a few to check it out. has any one encountered this sort of problem before? i am hoping it is just low on fluid or needs to be change. any input would be awesome.

just checked the atf, was a bit low, will top off tonight and also put some dry gas in. hoping this will fix if not into the shop we go...
 
I am hoping it is something that minor. topped off the ATF last night and still had the same issue today. seems as though when they rebuilt they didnt add enough atf but still didnt solve the problem. So we are dropping it off at the shop that did the tranny rebuild last summer as it is still under warrenty. worst comes to worst they do the needed work. i will keep you all up to date with what the problem is.

question about it being the spark plugs, if it is the plugs, when would it only happen when down shifting or upshifting between 3rd and 4th gear?

Yeah they doesn't make much sense to me either.

Try tightening down the "trans kickdown cable" ( I think that's what it is called ) if your 4runner has one, which it may not, but I think it does.

It is the cable that runs from your throttle body, down the drivers side of the engine to your trans. (while your in there, clean up any slop in the throttle as well =p) It's probably not your problem, but a quick and painless attempt. (If you tighten it too much it will shift very hard, so don't be too scared if this occurs, just loosen it up a bit)

My 2000 model had a stutter in OD when the motor was lugged...it was plugs and wires. Make sure you get NGK or Denso dual-element plugs and only buy NGK wires. I bought mine from Rockauto.com.

Turns out, someone had replaced the OEM plugs with single element plugs, and since our trucks use a waste spark ignition system, they won't last all that long.
 
Thanks for the info. It does mainly seem to make the hesitation at high way speeds. we did buy the truck used and it has been three years sense we purchased the truck so that seems about right with the plugs. i still will bring it to the shop because i do have the warranty on the tranny for the just in case factor. but if it is infact the plugs and wires i will have them replace with the good stuff.
 
So i got the news back last night. looks to only be a plug or wire causing the problem. so they are going to do a full tune up on the truck. pretty pumped it was something simple and nothing major. i am having them put in the ngk plugs and wires so i am excited to see some results compaired to what it was running like as of lately.

thanks for all the help with this. when it first happened i was expecting the worst but now am happy with the out come.
 
Make sure they put in the dual electrode plugs!

I've never had the studdering problem on the 3.4l due to plugs, but I've always changed my plugs every 15 to 30k. Interesting though...

Wow, you replace them every 15 to 30K? Plugs can be re-gapped and re-installed, you could save yourself some bucks by just regapping.
