Transmission Leak 99runner

I have a 99 runner, 3.4L automatic 4wd, SR5. i have a sugnificant tranny fluid leak that seams to be coming from the bell housing area. Im assuming its a input shaft seal... ?? i have done basically everything with these trucks, but have never done much with the trans but flushes. If someone can help me diagnose this somewhat, or if you believe its the transmission input shaft seal. how much work it would be to remove the tranny (tranny t-case) or how i would go about doin this project. every bit would be helpful thanks guys. :thanks:

leak update

decided to take on the project of the input shaft seal. Priced around, came up withone at about $5 at the auto parts store. Planning on doin this saturday, will keep updated/ with pics.

Just be sure it's really a tranny leak and not coming from your steering rack. I'd hate to see pull the trans only to find out it's your rack.
 
im about 99% sure its tranny fluid. the bottom back half and front bottom half of the tranny are soaked in trans fluid. im just not sure what seal it might be. (input shaft seal, torque converter seal) both only about $5.99. auto parts store only carries the torq seal so i bought it and hoping that the dealer has the input shaft seal. figure if i didnt know what seal it was before pullin the tranny i'd just buy both of them. and change out the rear main seal on the motor while the trannys out, costing about $17.99 for a rear main seal kit.
 
hmmm. okay, i will check that first thing in the morning to be sure. I will take some pictures and put them on here. Maybe that will help decide if it might be more of a steering leak or transmission leak.
 
Pulled the transmission out today. Before I go further, i must say that was by far the easiest thing. Very very easy to do. Got the trans out, and removed the torque converter and sure enough the torque converter seal was leaking. Went down the road to Toyota and bought one for $15. Installed the seal, and put the trans back in. Took it for a little drive alternating speeds from 30-75 mpg. Brought it back to inspect everything, and no leak. trans works great. If anyone needs some info on removing, and installing the transmission/ or seal. Post to this thread ill be more than happy to help out any way i can.
 
Only took a few pics, kinda got distracted its my daily driver so i needed it done very quickly and in only a day. In the third picture, you can clearly see where the seal was leaking and created a puddle in the bottom of the bell housing.

Hi 994runner21, I've read your post and I'm just 90% sure I have same issue on my wife's 2000 4Runner 3.4L, auto trans. Like you I've worked(mostly maintenance) on the 4runner and my 2002 Tacoma, but never the trans. Today I'm I'm going start pulling it. I may have questions later. Hope your offer is still there.Thanks man, Eric.
 
transmission slipping

starting to have issue with transmission slipping after sitting. Will work if I start out in low then 2nd then into drive and in runs fine. Also trans leaking fluid slightly. periodically checking fluid level and adding as needed. Trans shifts hard sometimes. 146000 miles on truck. Is this signs of a trans going bad?

I think I may have the same problem. Do I need to drop the tranny and transfer case in order to replace t.c. seal? Never done ANYTHING like this. A bit intimidating. Any help would be much h appreciated!
