transmission pan bolt torque specs

can anyone tell me the torque specs for the bolts holding on the transmission pan on my 2011 4runner? i have to take the pan off due to the fact that the drain plug stripped out. and is there a filter that i should change while i have it off?

The drain and fill ports are 15 ft lb

The filter is a mesh type, doesn't need to be replaced.

it says 15 ft/lbs for the drain plug and 15 for the check and 29 for the fill plug and only 39 in/lbs for the pan bolts.

somewhere else i found 21 ft/lbs for fill plug and higher for the pan bolts. i tightened mine to 21, or at least tried to but it never got there before stripping out. it doesn't seem like 21 would be too much, but i don't want to go through this again. and i sure don't want to have a problem with the pan bolts.

About as high a ft lb spec I've ever seen for transmission pans is 8 ft lb.
8 ft lb would be 96 in lb.

Excess torque on transmission pan bolts will create the problem you encountered or cause the pan gaskets to leak. The latter could happened if you had torqued somewhere in between spec and the torque you used.

You really don't need a lot of torque on transmission pan bolts.

the bolt I had the problem with was the drain plug not the actual transmission pan bolts, but I sure don't want to have a problem with them. So imagine the 39 in/lbs is correct for the trasmission pan bolts, it just don't seem like much but must be all that is needed.

The 39 in lbs shows up in my online '05 Tacoma A750 transmission FSM, but I would go with Jeremy556's spec.

I take it you have a torque wrench that read in lbs

Mine only goes down to 10 ft/lbs but I can borrow one.

Straight out of the 4Runner Repair Manual....that is,or at least was in the stickies to download.
Exactly what Jeremy wrote.....
67. INSTALL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION OIL PAN SUB-ASSEMBLY

(a) Install a new gasket to the oil pan.

(b) Install the oil pan with the 20 bolts.

Torque: 7.0 N·m (71 kgf·cm, 62in·lbf)
(c) Install the drain plug.

Torque: 20 N·m (204 kgf·cm, 15ft·lbf)

Also basic mechanic 101 stuff of tightening criss cross pattern and something like an oil pan ,tranny pan ,valve cover ect,where your trying to get a good seal I usually tighten to half the value first torque and bring it up to full torque the second time.
