Transmission Problem With The New Rig

I am sure that this topic has been discussed before, but i couldn't find the thread.

Going from first to second gear, the engine would rev up to like 1500 rps before it would grab second. Then once it grabs it jults the car alittle. Is this something that i should bring up to the stealer, and if i do bring it up, is there a remidy for it

always. especially when i am in a parking lot or traffic. It is kind annoying. Never happens past that spot, but doing slow driving, it always happens

Yes, I've noticed this when I first leave in the morning. It's like you have to punch it a little to get past 1st gear. It only does it if I'm acting pokey, not when I'm a bit more aggressive. I think it the transmission doing the driving mode analysis stuff it does.

Best example is when you cross over a speed bump in a parking lot.

You approach the bump at 10-15mph, slow down to cross the bump and then after crossing when you accelerate, the engine races to 1500rpm before the gear engages.

I was told this is typical for Toyota. My 3rd gen also did this, it is frustrating.

I just thought that it was a 4th gen thing.. So you experienced as well. It does get kinda annyoing in traffic thought. I almost have to feather the gas, find the sweet spot, then accelerate.

My truck idles around 1500 cold. It will take off if I put it in drive. I have to ride the brakes in a parking lot, the tranny will get confused over speed bumps, especially down hill.

If I wait 30 seconds, the idle drops to 1000 or so, it is fine. I have no problems once the truck warms up.

I think it is due to the transmission logic. The engine is turning higher than normal rpms for the vehicle speed. The transmission thinks the vehicle is traveling uphill, so it shifts the current gear at a higher rpm than normal.


If you truck is doing it all the time, go see the dealer, or reset the ECU.

I'm not sure, just got my truck. I believe you can disconnect the neg battery terminal overnight. That worked on my last vehicle. Hopefully someone else will chime in...

I believe that many transmissions do this. My G-wagen does it also. My 3rd gen did it. Basically, the computer does this to help warm up the powertrain quicker on cold starts. It keeps the tranny in gear longer than normal before shifting, especially 1st gear. It is normal.
