Transmission problem

I have a 99 runner with the auto trans. It started whining a couple weeks ago only during acceleration and when in gear. Fluid was good, whining got louder, now it just died. Starts up, but as soon as I put it in gear, the engine dies. Any suggestions?

A bad trans won't make the engine stall. Sounds like you have two different issues at work here.

Sure it can. Had it happen to a friends old Ford escort. The torque converter was all messed up and it would lockup and not unlock. Locking up the converter, and now allowing the truck to move is almost exactly like dropping the clutch and stalling the car out. They replaced the converter.

Same principle.

Now. This isn't me telling you that this is what is going on here.. but I just wanted to chime in. A bad Auto trans, in particular the torque lockup feature going bad, can cause stalling.

From what I've been researching, it's looking like the torque converter. The runner has close to 196k miles on it with regular maintenance. I will probably just try and find a good used transmission.

Sorry, I misread your original post. I didn't realize it was dying when going into gear. Usually though, I would think you'd feel the converter going bad. Was it shifting hard or not shifting leading up to any of this? Have you plugged in a code reader to see if that can tell you anything? Very well might be a bad converter but I'd suggest you check for any codes before dropping that kind of money on it. My $.02 anyway.

Yeah, it kinda felt like it was somewhat lagging when shifting. The shifting itself wasn't hard, but it definitely wasn't normal. That's when it started making the terrible whining sound. The CEL is on, I will run the code tomorrow when I get off of work. My scan tool is at work, otherwise I would've done it today.
