transmission problem

Where did you guys happen to buy your new t-stats? I've been looking to do a similar upgrade to my 92' and want to put a 90 degree t-stat in.

Gates makes several types of thermostats in order to provide the same design as specified by car manufacturers:
- The reverse poppet thermostat opens against the flow of coolant from the water pump. The coolant, under water pump pressure, is used to help the reverse poppet thermostat stay closed when cool to reduce leakage. This type is engineered with a self-cleaning, self-aligning stainless steel valve

- The offset thermostat with jiggle pin valves is equipped with a special valve in the flange, which allows trapped air in the system to escape and permits the venting of air from the system when filling it with coolant

- Gates also provides rubber seal thermostats, bypass thermostats etc., all with the same high quality

Self-cleaning and self-aligning thermostat valve
Original equipment design provides exact fit and performance
Precise sealing edges reduce leakage and premature cooling
Temperature sensitive heat motor provides consistent valve response for smooth performance and precise engine cooling
Stainless steel assembly and springs are engineered for long life
Alternate/OEM Part Number(s): 219, 32009

I was wondering if you could help me out? I am in MEXICO my 92 is messed up. It has a v6 auto trans. I start it up drive about a block and it stalls. Smell gas. Will not start seems flooded. Wait for about 2 min and starts back up and does the same thing. So I put it in low 1 and it runs fine. Have you ever encountered this problem?

Overdrive not engaged

I bought my 1995 3.0 ATM a couple of months ago. Discovered rats had chewed through some fuel injector wires causing a miss in cyl # 1. Compression was down around 50psi. We replaced the wires and did a valve cover replacement to fix an oil leak.

At that point, I had only driven the truck a few miles down a country road, hitting 45mph or so. My buddy's shop is about 30 miles from my house so when driving it home on the highway, I had the same problem as you all. At 65mph, I was running at 3500-4000 rpm and it wouldn't shift up. I've been working on a few other problems, (replacing the EGR Temp Sensor) and brake issues but now I'm turning my attention to the OD problem.

I noticed the Thermostat housing had a layer of white corrosion and the hose wasn't firmly secured to the housing. I tightened up the hose thinking that was the cause of the corrosion. I was/am planning on replacing the radiator soon as I live in Texas and I don't want overheating problems in summer. Took it to a Firestone and they did a pressure test, found a leak in the housing. I was planning on replacing it this weekend.

Just stumbled across this thread as I was reading up on how to replace the housing and its good to know that replacing the thermostat has solved some of your OD problems. I will do the same and report back. I was thinking of taking it to a trany shop for diagnostics but if a 8 dollar part will do the trick, I better try that first.

Thank you all for your insight and I will take this new found information and apply it to my truck. Fingers crossed!

** UPDATE **

Pulled the thermostat housing to discover the thermostat was missing, hummmmm. Installed new OE thermostat and hit the highway. O/D now works like a charm! Just wanted to say thanks for the tips and to anyone with O/D issues, check your thermostat before you drop cash in a tranny shop. No telling how much you might save.

OD issue solved thanks to this thread

So my "new to me" 95 SR5 had the same issue with not shifting into OD. I was under the impression that my thermostat must be good because my heat seemed to work fine and when my engine temp reached normal operating range it shifted fine. I replaced the ECM temp sensor and still it took 5 miles or more for normal operating temp to be reached and OD to be achieved. I changed the thermostat and gasket and now within 2 minutes it shifts perfectly. The previous owner had modified the old thermostat for full flow. Now, on to my exhaust leak!! Thanks to all previous posters. This info has been invaluable!

9ctot 4runner 4d4 at v6 trans problem

I have 91 Toyota 4runner with a real problem Won't go in high range but put it n 4 low an u can't stop it shifts gears an all but put n high or 2 wheel it t4ys to go but like the trans is shot drve to my dads parked got in latter to go home an wouldn't go but in 4 low will go like hell has ennyone ever had this problem

Why do people hop on threads with unrelated problems. This is a good thread on not shifting into OD due to tstats & temp sensors.
If you have other issues, start a new thread and maybe someone will help you.

maybe it's the temp sensor?

It doesn't matter what the climate is, the engine must be up to operating temp before the OD will kick in. I think 20 min would be a bit long even when if it was 20* outside.
It may be that the temp sensor used by the ECM is bad (not the same one the temp gauge uses). If it consistantly kicks in at the same temp as observed on the gauge (whatever it is), it may be that the trans is doing it's job, it's just not being told to do it at the right time (temp).

fourwd1, I have a similar problem. Sometimes my 4Runner won't shift into OD. There's no check engine light, I've had it at AAMCO and they say there are no codes, I've replaced the trans filter, fluid and shift solenoids and it still has problems. If the ATF temp sensor were intermittently bad would it not throw a code? How does one test the sensor?

Vinny,

Which thermostat did you replace? The engine coolant or transmission temp sensor or both?

There's no thermostat in the transmission, there's only one thermostat and that lives in the water neck of the engine. OEM is a 195ºF thermostat, make sure the one you buy has a "jiggle valve" or you will have lots of fun burping the radiator once you've installed it.

There are several different temp units, from 160º to 195º, its possible someone installed a cooler temp thermo if you're having issues with shifting. If you do find a cooler thermo was installed, keep an eye out for overheating with a 195º thermostat, as there might be a reason why the previous owner put a colder one in.

Oh yeah, I doubt you'll get a response from fourwd1, as his last post in this thread was several years old.

Flyin,

I've replaced the thermostat with a genuine Toyota t-stat. We're still in the testing phase, but so far so good. The one I took out looked genuine, just old.

The AAMCO guys told me I had metal shavings in my tranny pan (not true, I pulled the pan the week before and it was clean.) They said they would have to remove the transmission to diagnose the problem. Jeebus...smh...

Thanks for the info.

Wow, what a bunch of shuysters! And this is why I'd rather struggle to fix something myself, rather than take it to someone! Sorry, but there's only one person I can trust to do the best job on my vehicles, and that person's ME!!!

Glad to hear the t-stat's working for you so far, were you able to see what the original t-stat's temp setting was? Its usually stamped on the ring, and usually in ºC, so something like 88C or 80C or something else. That might verify that it wasn't the correct t-stat.

Transmission problems

I have a 94 4runner that won't shift. At about 30mph it stays at 3000rpm or it slips out just having straight rpm but can't actually feel a slip like you can when ur transmission is going out. But sometimes (very rarely) it will shift all the way threw and shift smooth. I Changed tranny fluid and filter, thermostat, and temp sensor and still hasn't fixed the problem. Any advice?

You might try the shift solenoids. They are easy to change. Though it was not the answer to my problem it may help you?

You are so right. I wish I had the time to do all my own work. A mechanic you can trust is worth his weight in gold!

The thermostat I took out says 82C. It looks genuine. Must have just gone bad.

Actually, an 82C is a 180ºF thermostat! That's why it was not shifting into OD! Stock thermostat should be 195ºF, so the thermo opens too soon, resulting in a colder-running engine, thus throwing the ecu off, making it think its not quite warm enough to shift into OD. This would be exacerbated in cooler ambient temps too.

I changed the transmission oil temp sensor and it shifted great thru all gear. Thought that fixed it until it got to full running temp then went right back to not shifting/slipping again.

where is it?

Joe, where is the temps sensor on the trans? My problem has come back recently. Funny thing, everything else works great. I have no other problems other than it just doesn't shift into OD?

I have a 180 in my 92 it works in overdrive but mine has a hard time going into drive sometime but not all the time did the shift solenoid, throttle position sensor adjusted the throttle cable and kick down cable, replaced computer and still doesn't work right

I need another transmission...

Little update, after a two week vaca to California, came back and my 4Runner won't shift into OD...at all? It's done the searching/dropping thing once and went back to shifting into OD for an afternoon but the next morning the problem was back. I took it to Toyota and they said it definitely doesn't shift into OD (haha!), they could find no codes and they recommend a new transmission. They've quoted me $3700 to install a re-manufactured trans, new rear main seal, fluid and labor. I'm looking into what it will cost to install a used one.
