Transmission question

I have a 96 limited 4x4 and the transmission has started slipping. I have a 98 parts truck that is 2wd. What would I have to do in order to make the transmission swap work? Both are autos

The output shaft of the 2WD needs to be swapped out for the 4WD output shaft. Otherwise, the transmissions should be compatible. You may also need to drill and/or tap a couple holes for the the transfer case adapter to bolt on to the 2WD case. You will also want to swap over the larger 4WD trans pan/filter/diipstick to the 2WD trans.

The output shaft swapping isn't a simple task - you can probably find a walkthrough thread on here.

Unless you have a pretty decent tool set and are above moderately confident on close spec mechanic work I would pass on it. I have seen a couple threads over the years and only one guy that did it all successfully; but he was on Hawaii with no other option. It is do able but it would be easier / more confident in the long run to source a 4wd transmission. Once you start pressing/ pulling gears on the shafts there is no going back.

What Charlie said.

And this...

A340E to A340F Transmission Swap

Do note that technically the valve bodies are different for too.

There's only one bolt hole that needs to be added, the center bottom for the tcase adapter, other then basic hand tools u need a slide hammer to pull the front pump, snap ring pliers (one long & large), the biggest thing u have to be careful of is making sure u get all the clutch packs fully engaged when reassembling. If ur having to force parts, ur probably doing something wrg. With all that said, u can get a used replacement for so cheap it hardly makes to worth the effort unless u plan to mod the VB and accumulator pistons while in there... it's not a difficultly task but not knowing ur abilities it could be.
