Transmission Rebuild

I am in the market for a trail rig. After chasing after a 'deal' on a 3rd gen to build, and not being successful, I've found a half built 86 auto t4r (22re with 40k on rebuild) with a bad tranny. I haven't purchased it yet but am extremely excited about it.

My question for you pros: would I need to pull the engine to drop the tranny? I feel comfortable enough doing the trans myself, but I do not have the drive to buy something that I'm going to have completely rebuild. In short, if this is going to be an extended project I'd rather just continue my search.

I guess the 'classic' section doesn't see as much action. If anyone can find a DIY for a 86ish trans swap please post it! (I can't find one?!)

Here is the 86. So... Maybe it's a little more than halfway done. Not my exact tastes, which means I'll be changing quite a bit, but it's a nice start.

You can pull the tranny without pulling the motor. Easily have it out in a couple of hours.

I would hit it for $1,400 if I knew for sure that it was rust free/minimal rust and nothing else major was wrong with it.
