I realize this is a 4runner forum but I figure someone may have run into a similar problem and could help me out.
I've a 1986 Toyota 4x4 pickup with an automatic transmission and what I believe is an SR22 engine in it.
When I first got the pickup it shifted just fine. But lately it seems to shift from 1st to 3rd gear skipping 2nd gear entirely. I have to put the transmission in 2nd to get it to shift from 1st to 3rd and in DRIVE to get it into Overdrive. When I turn on the OD switch the OD light flashes on occasion.
I also discovered (one hot summer) when the engine gets unusually hot the transmission shifts properly and works perfectly.
I've reason to believe my water pump may be going out, also my fan clutch is stuck "ON" so the fan always spins at full speed. I'm not sure how these are related to the transmission but I've heard temperature affects the transmission.
Any input would be appreciated.
