Transmission shifting problems

I have an '03 SR5, V8 with 145K. It has been very well maintained, and never pushed to do anything that anyone here would consider extreme. The trans fluid was changed at 90K and again at 120k, both times with Toyota fluid. It now will not shift into 2nd or 3rd very well, and when it does it really slams into gear. When I check the fluid it looks very clean, although it seems a bit low. What is the right way to check the level?? Engine running or off? In Park or Neutral? The owner's manual does not specify. Anyone know?

You will probably have better luck finding the info you seek, if you post this in the 4th gen area.

My mistake, I had too many "3"s" in my brain at once, and went '03, 3rd gen.

Check the fluid level when it is at operating temp and with the engine running.

If it happens when you first start up, it could be a weak battery. The servos that switch gears are electric.

Toyota programmed the trans to stay in gear until the engine is at running temp. So it feels like its not shifting fast enough. But once the temp is normal, so should be the tranny
