Transmission slip question?

I'm curious to know if this happens to anyone else. Occasionally when I'm stopped at a red light or stop sign on a hill, my truck will roll back while I'm transitioning from brake to gas and the transmission will go "CLUNK" and I will hear a BEEPING noise.

The fact that Toyota designed the truck to "BEEP" when this happens makes me think that it's somewhat common. On the other hand, I don't know why these trucks don't have a "hill holder" feature to prevent it from rolling back on a slight grade.

Mine 2004 Sports holds the hill after it rolls back few inches, no clunk of any kind though (4WD engaged).

Completely normal. That's the Uphill Assist kicking in and the beeping is the 4runner telling you about it. Don't worry about the clunking and clicking noises, just part of the system doing it's job.

You should try the Downhill Assist Control feature. Shift into 4-Lo and hit the DAC button. It's a little freaky going downhill and having the truck do ALL the braking with your foot off the brake pedal.

I'd have to ask how steep these hills are? Even in mountain driving, I've never had my 2k3 roll backwards from a dead stop. I believe "hill start assist" is standard on all 4th Gens...it's not designed to hold you indefinitely, but it should hold long enough to go from brake pedal to gas.

BTW, have you looked in the manual? Something that includes a beep warning should definitely be documented.

The beeping is the Hill-Start Assist Control kicking in. See Section 1-7 of the Owners Manual.

There is no button, it is enabled all the time. As soon as the vehicle starts to roll back the brakes are pulsed to help keep the vehicle from rolling back. It will not lock the brakes, just pulse them.

have you checked your transmission fluid? I know that sounds odv. but , I had some problems with it poping out of gear and turns out the oil was getting hot and spraying out. didn't know it at the time. I ended up adding a transmission cooler and everything is ok now.
