Transmission Slippling

Howdy Gang, has anybody noticed a problem that feels like their trans. is slipping? Here's the scenario: Heading into a corner, I apply the brake and slow down to about 15-20 mph. As I enter the corner and begin to hit the gas, the engine revs up about 1000 - 2000 rpm without actually putting the power down to the wheels (almost like i'm in neutral). Then, the trans. seems to "catch" and the truck lurches forward. After that things are fine. Same thing happens if I'm rolling towards a red light and the light turns green before I actually stop. I hit the gas to get moving and I get the engine revving without the response going to the wheels. Anybody else have a similar experience?

that's weird...i think you should have that checked out. in both scenarios you talked about, if it were my truck, it'd give you whiplash because of the throttle response.

Do you have the 4 speed transmission or the 5 speed transmission? Is it just shifting to select a different gear or is it slipping? If it is slipping it will stay in the same gear and you will notice the increase in rpm but no forward motion. I have noticed the down shifting for gear selection with the increase in rpm's but no slipping.

Hey Pitt. I"m not 100% sure on whether or not the trans. is "slipping" but I know for certain that I am getting an increase in RPMs without forward the motion. Like you mentioned, it may be related to downshifting and hunting for the correct gear, but the excessive revs and then the "lurch" forward after it finds the right gear just doesn't seem right. Have you heard of anybody else having a similar problem?

Welcome to the world of automatic transmissions...

With a manual transmission, you'd just drop it into second going into the turn and accelerate smoothly out of the turn.

With automatics, most of the time they are too stupid to downshift automatically when slowing down (until you get to a near stop). Once you round the corner and accelerate, it takes the 1000-2000 rpm you're giving it before the transmission figures out "oh, he wants to go faster" and downshifts...

The feeling you get about the 1000-2000 rpm spin-up not delivering power to the wheels (until the transmission drops to "passing gear") is two-fold: 1) the torque converter allows slippage (much more than a direct clutch), and 2) since your transmission is still in third (or fourth), the engine is really lugging a bit.

The good news is: there's nothing wrong with your vehicle. It just requires a little more patience when turning corners.

Personally, I really miss my 5-speed manual in my old 96 4Runner. It's too bad Toyota dropped the manual transmission.

Mine does the same thing, and I am just getting used to it. I previously had a 5 speed manual transmission, so it didn't seem "right" to me either, but Dan's explanation is dead on.
