91 4Runner 4WD V6 197,000 miles
My problem started a few months ago where when I would begin to pull away in first gear the transmission would completely skip over the normal shift into 2nd (15mph) and about 20mph would jump into third. This was a daily occurrence if the truck was cold or had been even just sitting for about an hour. And occasionally it would not drop all the way back down into first at a stop. Once warm it would shift as smoothly as a sewing machine. Again, after sitting idle for at least an hour or longer it would revert back.
On the recommendation of our normal mechanic I took it to a transmission shop where the solenoids (#'s 1, 2 and the lockup) were replaced and the valve body cleaned)
Observances since I had it back about two weeks:
(1) With the exception of 1 time (today) it has not skipped over 2nd as it had been doing.
(2) The shifts are harder (not as smooth) as they end up being after the vehicle has been driven for approximately 10-15 minutes.
(3) No issues of it NOT dropping back in to low at a stop.
I'm afraid all the transmission guy did in "cleaning" the valve body was to just soak it it parts cleaner and reinstall. Is there not a rebuild kit for the valve body?
I'm at a loss.
Could it be something else?
ECU?
Speed Sensor?
