Transmission stories

I had questions about my 93 V-6 auto. The fluid was terrible. This portends bad maintenance overall...but I am the paranoid sort. Seemed to shift funny, but it's my first T4R. Got the tranny flushed and filled, but found out the filter was not replaced Finally took it to the dealership for the REAL expert opinion....and talked too much. Suddenly 4 expert techs drive it, fluid "has metal chips and is burnt" (three week old fluid)..."overall good condition but you need a new transmission badly." All along, the tranny seemed to get better and better as I learned throttle use for the truck...yet I shopped around for a rebuild shop, as wife and kid stopped driving it because they were afraid. Got quotes from 1 to 3 grand $. Found a great shop, the tech drove the truck and WOULD NOT START THE WORK BECAUSE THE TRANNY HAS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. Shifts fine, O/D locks up fine. We both looked at the fluid, it is fine. Go figure. Truck is sorted out now for me to go on deployment (Navy).
