So I bought a 91 4runner in Calgary for 2K, had a mechanic friend of mine have a look over it (look OVER, as we weren't allowed to drive it at the auction) everything visible and immediately check-able was good. After a little work someone had overfilled the AT fluid so the light was coming on, rear springs, etc etc we thought it would be in a good enough condition to drive across the country. By the way, Canada is MASSIVE.
The old girl, to her credit, did get us all the way across and home albeit 2 sticks of epoxy putty for running radiator repairs, 12 L of oil, 5L of coolant amongst other bits and pieces.
My major concern now is that while i thought she was a bit gutless coming off a stop it has become apparent that it may be because the tranny is on its way out. Sometimes on the trip, we would put our foot down from a stop and she would pick up n go, as you would expect the vehicle to,other times (and most of the time) it's a very slow climb to second gear, and sometimes (if she has to climb a hill right off the mark) it feels like she's just not going to make it at all.
The next problem, and I'm pretty sure that this is the torque converter, is while traveling at steady speed, the revs will climb by a few hundred, then fall. this will happen a couple of times, then stop for a while, then happen again. Annoying to say the least as it does jerk the car forward a little when it happens.
When she starts cold she blows a lot of exhaust. A LOT. Billowing white clouds. I have no idea what that could be.
So I've got a radiator that is covered in patchy repairs with more holes that I can't see that have dripped onto the fan, coolant flung everywhere. A sluggish start 9 times out of 10, something going wrong causing the revs to jump when I'm in top gear and I'm burning something that is making clouds of white smoke from the exhaust when she's started up.
Oh, and sometimes when she starts, it sounds like she's going to stall, choking and spluttering away, till you give her some juice.
I can get a second hand 95 JDM transmission with 70K on it for $300 CAD, is this worth doing? where should i look for the other issues?
