Trasnmission Help

I have what appears to be a transmission problem and, unfortunately, it is in my wife's 2000 SR5 4WD - Auto Tranny (101k). She was driving two weeks ago on the highway (hot day, apparently). When she slowed down for traffic, the truck wouldn't move back into gear. It would rev up to 5,000 but not shift. She was able to move to the side of the highway and after the car sat for a while (presumably cooling), she was able to move again and back up to highway speeds.

during that rest, she checked the coolant, ATF and there were none of the milkshake issues. I wouldnt expect that since we change the radiator about 15k ago.

Today, the same thing happened. She waited and was able to "limp" home. We went to our indie mechanic and he said we needed a new tranny -- $3-4k. He heard the story and did some of the same checking we did so I am somewhat skeptical.

I have seen a number of threads about tranny whines, planetary gears and replaceing solenoids. I don't believe there has been any whining but honestly I am not driving the car.

Any thoughts on first step?
