Ok I'm new here after searching forums I finally decided to reach out for help to see if any of you could offer suggestions for a mechanic in Northern Indiana.
I am stuck here in Knoxville, TN and my wife and boys are traveling 9 hours from home in the 4runner and it's ill. They made it to their destination but now need to get it checked/fixed.
I know lots of forums on here about the potential problem but here's a summary of what happened. I'd prefer to find someone who specializes in toyota besides a dealership....
I loaded up my wife and 2 sons into our 2002 SR5 with a utility trailer and 3 small dirt bikes and they headed out to visit family in Northern Indiana. At any rate, the check engine light came on near Indy's N side and she had a nearby Toyota dealer check the code and it came up as a AT "shift solenoid" code number (can't recall the number, sorry). At any rate, the tranny isn't whining but the fluid is dark, not a healthy red. Not milky either and it seems to be shifting ok...they said it probably needs flushed and may need a new tranny but it would probably get them to where they were going....
Just had the transmission serviced here in Knoxville 10k miles ago and have towed the bikes locally without issue to trails, etc. 4runner has 117k miles on it and we are the second owners. Never an issue but I do think she pulled the trailer through the mountains with OD on....trailer weighs about 1200lbs on the high side.
At any rate, she made it to N. Central Indiana (near Rochester) but I have no clue who to have her take it to besides a toyota dealer...which I'll do if I must but there are several within an hour's drive and I'd like to find the one least likely to just recommend a new transmission if a simpler fix will do... Any Toyota mechanics that you can recommend or tranny shops in the South Bend, Elkhart, or FT. Wayne areas much appreciated!
