TRD & 4.7L Supercharger

Hey all - I'm proposing an email blast by everyone here willing to participate - to trd... [email protected]

Basically complaining about how TRD is taking so long to make the 4.7L s/c available again - and how many of us want to buy it - how it was misleading advertising - how many of us decided to buy the 4 Runner because that was an option to add... etc... Who's up for email blast????

I can't really afford a supercharger right now, but I figured I would try to help your cause and was curious if it would work on the new higher horsepower V8 in 2005. So, I wrote this email:

"Hello,
I am writing because it seems like it has taken a long time the supercharger has been on hold. I had a choice between 2 used 03 4runners and had I known that I wouldn't be able to purchase the supercharger after the fact, I would have bought the one with the supercharger, eventhough it was a little more and wasn't the exact color I wanted. When will it be available again and will it also work on the 2005 V8?

So that's one approach. Another approach is we all email them with gentle reminders that we are ready to spend the money on the SC. In the email we could ask if there is any pubically available information on a revised release date. If you'd really like to get their attention mention similar vehicles you could consider investing in the future.

Guess which is more likely to succeed.

My point here is, don't be a jerk when you email. Firstly remember that some joe-schmo reads them. (Typically they look as stupid as that guy on the tv show.) Secondly, you want stupid-ugly-guy to forward that message to the appropriate people (which is probably someone in outbound marketing.) So an email that's all bitching and moaning will promplty get a form letter reply and a one-way ticket to the bit bucket.

On the other hand, a message which says 1) I want to buy one, 2) I'm disappointed, and 3) I'm willing to go buy something else garners attention.

Just my 2cents. For what its worth, I fully agree that some emails are in order. I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't an engineering issue at hand here.

I agree with you. If I were to choose only one approach, it would be yours. I simply wrote what I was thinking. If everyone's email are very similar, I don't think that it will get as much of a response as individually unique emails. Basically, I think both approaches should be used. Hopefully, more people will join in.
 
SC addition sounds good. What does it buy someone?
Added HP/Torque?
Cost out the door?
Warranty?
Just think if you want to create interest you need to sell some benefits. JMHO
 
Sorry - I thought everyone here already was aware of the specs of the TRD 4.7l s/c.

Takes the hp up to about 355, torque up to about 450. Costs around 3800 from eddie, and about 500 labor.
 
While you've got the pen out, you may also want to drop a note to various 3rd-party parts suppliers like toyotaparts4u.com. If they get several inquiries and they then ask TRD about it, it's likely to be given more weight than if you ask TRD directly.

BTW, I'm interested in this too and have already "done my part" for the cause via letter writing.
 
Check this months issue of 4-Wheeler. They test drove a 2004 V8 4Runner with a TRD SC. It puts out 343HP.

I don't know if its available yet.

'05 Runner w/ SC

Just looked through one of my monthly truck magazines. Seems Toyota is going to offer a S/C version of the Runner as standard equipment. The price tag for the S/C factory Runner is $48K!!

Looks like all they did was bolt on a S/C and raise the price by $12K.

Wasn't the S/C a $4K aftermarket option at one point?

Thats probaly why you won't see the S/C aftermarket for awhile.
 
Makes sense, keep the TRD SC for yourself and hike up the price when you add it to your vehicles. I bet someone will pay that much for a SC runner.
 
I looked for this at 4-wheerler online couldn't find it - can you clarify where you read that...

If that's true - that's quite a price mark-up. However, a fully loaded 4-runner goes for just over 40k MSRP, so it would be in reality about 8k markup for something that costs about $4,500 to install, right? SO, it might be appealing to someone who just wants to finance the additional cost of a s/c instead of coming up with $4,500 out of pocket...

Methinks I saw it in Petersens Off Road. They had a two page spread on the '05 Runner with S/C. The base price was $38K and with the S/C is listed for $48K.

They said it was a buttery smooth exhibition of raw power. 0-60 in the 7.6 sec range. Not bad for a full time 4WD w/17 inch rubbers.

I wonder if they did the other suggested upgrades? Or just bolt on a charger?

343hp as stated in another post is the hp rating they listed.

Think about the guy that has no idea how much an afermarket sc will cost. I have a feeling someone will see this brand new shinny 4runner and say "I'll take it" at whatever price they have on it.
 
The 0-60 in 7.6 must be a stock non- supercharged model, as 7.6 is typical of stock 4.7l V8 acceleration. I'll check petersen's...

It was that way when I was shopping for my '02 Runner. Yes, I traded my black, '02 sport for a '03 Sport. No regrets.

Anywho, the dealer had a new '02 Runner w/SC on the lot and was gouging about $7K more for it than the other Runners.

Put a price on anything, somebody, somewhere will buy it.

I just got my Truckin Times trade magazine, seems the Runner has slipped in sales....

May '04 10,437 sold vs. May '03 10,913

and

June '04 8,194 vs. June '03 8,775

Mine was included in the '03 8,775 tally. :happy bda
 
I gotta say - that if 6 months from now TRD still isn't making the S/c available, but that it's a factory installed option on 2005 - I'll trade mine in, even if it costs $48k.

Pros:

New 270hp V8 should pump out even more than 350hp w/ TRD s/c.

Backup camera - I know it's kinda trivial - but I like it - I'm a geek & I love gadgets.

3rd row seat now available w/ navigation & JBL

I get a new 4Runner - mind already has 35k miles, probably would have 45k miles in 6 months...

Cons:

Down payment/ loss on trade in

Higher monthly payments
