just light $58 on fire an get the same if not better results. Oil collects dirt... dirt in the intake path = no bueno. Never understood the attraction to these gimmicky things.

Believe me - I'm generally of that opinion as well. But TheWraith's CAI Dyno Runs have begun to sway my inclination to toss these claims out with the bath water...

Lord knows how often I had to clean the MAF in my '99 taco thanks to the K&N (and that motor lasted 265K with a lead foot)...

Agreed not exactly done in a controlled environment, but TheWraith's dyno results speak more than most people's "Seat of the Pants Dyno" reporting after bolting on CAI's and such IMNSHO

At least "The Wraith" was attempting to eliminate confirmation bias in some way. He certainly caught my attention...

Now that you guys have the Toyota/K&N filter for a couple of years now, what's the verdict? Worth it? Or not?

I had a K&N on my 3rd gen, it is 18yrs old, and 270k miles. No MAF sensor failure (touching wood...).

MAF sensors get oily and dirty no matter what kind of air filter is used. OEM paper or reusable air filters make no differnce.

ding ding ding!!!!! yep it does, hence the efficacy of the K&N filter.

also, where do you think the dirt goes that a regular paper filter catches?!?! right in the intake path.

Of course extra oil on the K&N filter can get removed and foul up not only the MAF sensor but can also effect turbos on engines so equipped.

I think the the high flow K&N have a place in larger HP engines and race applications where they can increase horsepower and I have used them on an older Mustang GT and recently on a Genesis G70 with some slight increase in HP verified by running at a drag strip. Lower ET and slightly higher MPH

Having said that, they will always pass more dirt along with the additional airflow, its simple physics the only way to increase airflow is to increase the surface area of the filter or as K&N does to reduce the effective fine particle size trapping capability of the filter media.

IMO on a stock 4Runner there would minimal if any performance gains and you will see an increase in dirt and dust being deposited into the engine, which could possibly be mitigated by more frequent oil changes ??

I ran a K&N drop in filter on my 4th gen and my 5th gen and there was a noticeable improvement in throttle response, removing the carbon filter in my 4th gen was crucial though
