TRD Air Filter is Available

you guys are talking about just the TRD Air Filter, and not the new TRD intake that is available correct? The new intake they're claiming something like 15% increase...

TRD air filters are made by AFE and they come pre-oiled. I used one in my 4th gen V8 and my UOAs showed that it filtered as good as the paper OEM. To re-oil just soak/saturate the filter and damp with a paper towel. You will not gain any hp, you just get a lifetime filter.

What "new TRD intake that is available"?????
Where did you see that?

If that's true, this would be something I'd be interested to buy. Too bad TRD hasn't moved forward since the 3.4L V6 from the late/early 90's Toyota 4Runners/Tacomas.

Shocking that they aren't making TRD products for the newer generation Toyota's (other than the FJ).

my bust

yea i definitely mistyped and would like to apologize for getting everyones hopes up. What i INTENDED to type was the K&N intake system that is available for around 350dollars..

Wondering if the one they are coming out with for the 2010 FJ's will work on ours. We share the same engine now and their stock intake looks exactly like ours now.
They are supposed to be out today, the 30th and that's why I got all excited. Read this thread over on the FJ forum that I've been keeping an eye on.... 2010 Trd Cai - Toyota FJ Cruiser Forum

"Engine killer"

Thought I'd pass along something a mechanic told me a few years back while doing some routine service work on my F150 pickup. This guy builds engines and races speedboats that he builds for "fun" - he's a hardcore engine guy. I asked him to check my K&N filter to see if it needed cleaning and he said "you mean the engine killer?" I said "what?". He said "those filters DO improve performance and gas mileage a little because they let a lot more air through than a typical filter, however...they also let a lot of extra "crap" and dust through that over time destroys your engine. I took the K&N out, trashed it, and now use standard air filters and replace them regularly. You can do whatever you want with this "data", just thought I'd pass it along.

Years ago when engine's intake systems were designed poorly there was hp to gain using K&N air filters. Modern engines are tweaking every bit of power and mileage out and the air filter is no longer the intake's restricting factor. If anything can be improved it's the plumbing.

Again, years ago the problem with SOME K&N filters was the fit. There would be gaps/leaks in the fit NOT the filter material. I've been using cotton/oil filters for many years and in the last 20 years I have not had one that leaked or fit poorly and provided the same quality of filtering as the OEM paper filter. This was verified with used oil analysis (UOA). I have no problem using cotton oil filters and recommending them, based on fact, not someone's opinion.

I just installed my TRD air filter today I have no noise around the 2k to 3k rpm range. I however did notice a whistle almost at that range when I have my K&N Cold Air Intake on before I took it off because of fitment issues. But so far seems to be a decent mod a tiny difference in mileage about .5 better so I will say it was worth the money.

For what it's worth, all of those oiled filters can be cleaned and re-oiled with any competing manufacturer's filter kits. So if Toyota charges an arm and a leg for a recharge kit, you can probably get a K&N recharge kit for cheaper. The oils might be different colors (K&N is red, TRD is yellow, etc), but they all work the same.

That is encouraging. They look almost identical, so I am surprised it isn't making any noise. I feel as if my K&N filter has gotten even worse with respect to whistle, and if the TRD one doesn't whistle, then I may just have to do the switch-a-roo. Anybody else have the TRD filter and have whistling or no whistling?

--The filter does come pre-oiled - no need to add any oil.

Just and FYI... I took mine out due to a high pitched noise at right around 2000 rpm's - was very slight but one i noticed it very annoying to me - took my dealer and myself a good amount of time to link the noise to the filter but they were great and did not give up until we found the cause. It is nothing wrong with the filter -- just harmonic noise generated by the air flow - I thought it was electronic feedback from the radio at first but after taking a stock filter and my TRD for a ride at the same time the noise was gone after putting the stock filter back in.

He had the noise with the TRD filter maybe after awhile it will show up who knows? I had a noise with the cold air intake by K&N not the filter

Anyone ever had a MAF sensor crap out because of the oil from oiled filters? I would not use one personally. I know there will always be guys that say I've ran these filters for 20+ years with no Problems, but also I have seen many bad sensors due to oil.

I have indeed seen people foul up their MAFs due to oiled filters. However, in each case the person had recently cleaned and re-oiled their filter, and they had over-oiled it. All that loose oil can get sucked off under heavy throttle, and the first thing it hits is the MAF. As long as you don't overdo the oil when you clean them, you'll be fine.

Additionally, you only apply oil to the "up wind" side of the filter, so the airflow sucks the oil into the filter, not away from it. I've seen people oil the wrong side and likewise suck oil off of the filter.

Pretty much comes down to following directions. The instructions always tell you which side to oil and and how much to use. :)

Now that you guys have the Toyota/K&N filter for a couple of years now, what's the verdict? Worth it? Or not?

I had a K&N on my 3rd gen, it is 18yrs old, and 270k miles. No MAF sensor failure (touching wood...).

TRD's test show about a 7 HP gain-similar to CAI intakes or other mods.

Ditto. Would love to see a dyno comparison of just the "Drop in" TRD Filter vs TheWraith's full TRD CAI improvements.

Many have suggested the TRD CAI's primary benefits come from the filter element itself (I believe the CAI's filter is a gauze/oil type filter just like this stock TRD Replacement).

Our T4R's have a rudimentary factory "CAI" in stock form IIRC.

I'm currently unconvinced that the TRD CAI, filter only or whole thing, add much if anything over stock.

At a minimum you get a reusable element :)

just light $58 on fire an get the same if not better results. Oil collects dirt... dirt in the intake path = no bueno. Never understood the attraction to these gimmicky things.
