TRD CAI vs URD aFe Intake

Just purchased a 2016 TEP and am looking at cold air intakes.

Per my research I've been able to discover that the TRD CAI will give me an additional 5HP and 19TQ (this was dynoed by member "TheWraith" in pg 7 of below linked thread).

I cant however find any dyno results to confirm URD's claimed +10HP and +15TQ anywhere on this forum. Can anyone who has the URD unit confirm these results?

Both units are roughly the same price and I cant decide on which one to get. Any advice would be very appreciated. Also, thank you all for the wealth of information on this site; I've been lurking around for a couple months before deciding to pull the trigger on my 4Runner and am extremely grateful for all I've learned from you reading your posts on this forum!

i'd go with the TRD. (did so myself, in fact.)

with a new 2016 under warranty, i'd rather have it stamped "Toyota" if anything happens to go wrong under the hood. just makes life easier.

i really like mine. been running it for years with the aFe Pro Dry filter, which fits perfectly.

K&N 63-9034 kit Claims 12.8 HP gain @ 4600. I Have the TRD kit and I'm going to upgrade to the K&N, The only problem it's not California legal.

Didn't another member find a way to get a deal on the TRD intake for around $250 if I remember correctly? If I can find that deal, I'll just go with that.

Thanks, I like this kit. I'm currently living in NH and moving back to SF in a few months so I could purchase now and uninstall it when I need to do my first CA smog check in 5 years.

As long as I replace the K&N kit with the original unit before a CA smog test I should be good to pass, right?

Also, in regards to Toyota warranty, as long as I replace the K&N kit with the original unit before showing up for dealer warranty work, the dealer shouldn't be able to tell I've played around with an aftermarket intake, right? Can the 4Runner's computer notify the dealer that an aftermarket intake has been installed and then uninstalled?

You can save yourself some time and possible grief if you purchase the TRD CAI instead of "another" brand.
Save time=don't have to change intakes out before going to the dealer.
Grief=TRD CAI is made for Toyota for your 4Runner, if you have related issues after using another brand CAI, you may get pushback from the dealership.

Want to save yourself some $$ on a TRD CAI, look at this link, otherwise, good luck on your CAI mod.

I think it would pass smog with it on there. I'm going to try it and just gonna leave it on there. I really like the sound of the K&N and I want the most performance these trucks need it. I'm also doing the full exhaust getting rid of the second set of cats and I think it'll still passed smog.
As far as warranty goes unless it's directly related to the motor I'm just gonna leave mine on there. Besides that's why we bought Toyotas you don't need to take it back to the dealer. Lol

Haha, exactly why I bought the 4Runner. I previously owned two Tacomas and they both ran 100+ miles flawlessly.

Just ordered the K&N unit. Will post pics and quick first impressions once I get it bolted on.

I was looking at the TRD CAI (my 2016 is on order) mainly for those times when I'm driving at higher elevations here in Montana (and WY, ID, CO, etc.). But I was turned off by the fact that the TRD air filter is oiled. I've heard some horror stories -- not from 4Runner owners, though -- of the oil making its way to and affecting sensors in the intake.

I have heard that AFE's dry filters are very good, though. I went to their website and couldn't find any drop-in filters that fit the '15-'16 4Runner. Can you pass along which AFE filter you found that fits the TRD CAI? This may just get me to spring for the TRD CAI.

You don't have to run an oiled filter. It will accept the stock air filter in the TRD box.

How'd it work out for you? Have you had to smog this year?
