TRD Cold Air Intake Whistle

I just installed a TRD CAI on my 2010 5th gen and get a pretty annoying whistle sound at between 1800-2200 rpm, through the early part of the throttle action. It is like a high pitch whine, not super loud at volume 10, but still very noticeable. It only occurs when the pedal is partly depressed achieving the rpms noted above, and is easily replicated. If I let off the throttle slightly at about 2300 or so, it occurs dropping down the rpms but if I get back on the gas just after it stops, it happens on the way up in about the same rpm band.

Anyone experience something similar and (more importantly) figure out a way to get rid of it? I checked all the connections and everything is sound.

A couple of us who have this system experience the same thing and its covered in a separate thread. I havent heard much of a fix. I dont mind it, radio usually covers it since its on most of the time.

Pretty common thing with CAIs in general. FWIW, I don't have a whistle on my TRD - not sure if the positioning/angle of the intake tube within the couplers play any role. Do you have the third hole inside the box bolted up with a couple of extra washers to take up some of the thread from the too long bolt?

I have the stock intake on my 2011 TE and it has done the whistle since the day I got it, I just dropped a K&N air filter in and it got louder but, I kinda like it it's just the noise it makes sucking in air because it's so bad a** haha.

Thanks - that's the kind of advice I was looking for. I will try to shift the couplers around and also add some washers to the bolt for the third hole.

And to the folks that like the sound, I am not sure it is the same as what you are hearing. Air flow noise would be one thing - I know what that sounds like from real CAIs I've had. This is more of the kind of sound you would hear as part of a hearing test - a real high pitch noise, not air being sucked in through the normal channels.

Mine does not do what you describe at all. Has to be something different with the install.
 
I've got it, and I like it. Every intake I have had had some sort of sucking/whistling kind of sound. The stock intake is loaded with sound deadening stuff according to my tech. The idea behind the intake is to get rid of that stuff and free things up. Enjoy the freedom my man!:guitar3:

There is also a small hole on the box that needs to be plugged with a supplied plastic plug - don't forget that one either
 
seems like a toyota thing. My tC always had a noticeable whistle stock, only to be amplified to a full blown turbo sound with the trd cai i had put on.

Maybe it has something to do with the airflow around the throttle body in certain throttle positions and creates a whistle. Press into it a little more or less when accelerating and it'll cease to exist. Plus you got the cai on there for that awesome throaty sound anyways right?:thumb3:
 
My 2014 limited has it. I thought it might be a bad battery/alternator. I guess I just live with it. Good to know it's nothing major. Anyone who figures a way to get rid of it, please post!

i think this may be the source of the whistle. mine does it; doesn't bother me.
