TRD Off Road vs Trail

Figure I do a quick write up on the differences for any prospective buyers. Canadian Truck fyi, there I'd only 1 trim level for Trail and TRD Off Road. KDSS standard in 2016 vs 2019.

I own a 2016 Trail and just bought a 2019 TRD Off Road.

Some subtle differences, all in all the tweaks that were made were all cosmetic.

1. Wheels , difference in colour
- the TRD Off Road wheels have black accents vs the trail is all brushed metal look. Same shape and design.

2. Roof Rail
- TRD has blacked out the whole roof rails. Yeah! Saves me a mini project.

3. Hitch ball? I got one with my TRD but not with my Trail. Anyone not get one or get one?

4. Carbon fiber interior bezel on the TRD vs the glossy black on Trail.

5. The obvious red stitching on the driver and passenger seat head rest on the TRD that screams TRD if you didnt know already. Trail has no stitching of TRD. Not sure I like this or not, to each their own.

6. A different shift knob on the TRD vs Trail. The Trail I'd a standard looking knob while the TRD has a flat top to it.

7. In case you wanted to advertise your model, without fail it comes with a TRD Off Road Badge on the outside C pillar in brushed aluminum. Atleast it wasn't chrome but they should of probably went with black to go with the black out theme of the roof rails and wheels. There is no badging for the Trail.

8. The fabric floor mats they offer say TRD off road. The rubber mats that came with the TRD are the same as the Trail.

I think that's it. Yes it still has its outdated navigation and regular key non push button. Some may call it a classic, lol.

Why did I change to 2016 to 2019? Simple, these trucks hold their value ridiculously well, I got top dollar for my trade in and having a truck 3 yrs newer will help with future resale value if they ever make a 6th gen. Or if they fail on that, at least I know I have one of the later year 5th gens.

PS: I asked the dealer how much they were selling the Pros for, they said MSRP. There is not market value BS markup here. All sold out , from prior orders/reservations.

good observations. I swapped my 2011 Canadian Trail with a 2019 VooDoo Blue Pro. what I didn't appreciate is that Toyota deleted the information display that was in the centre about the vents. 2019 models (and I think some previous years also) now only has a simple ugly looking digital clock. I really loved the centre info with range, terrain select, temperature, direction details. they also deleted the USB from the glove compartment and put the usb in the centre console... no longer discrete - at least they should have kept on the in the compartment. Also deleted AC power converter from the middle console. plus no option for sliding cargo try. BTW paid MSRP for the Pro so yes your dealer was correct. I picked one up from Scarborough toyota.

the rest is all well. love the fox ride. a bigggg upgrade from 2011.

what is that? i'd love to have a Sliding Cargo Tray in my Pro... i got used to it so much in my 2011 Trails that I really miss it.... i used it for so many reasons.... many don't like it at all as it take away some cargo space. are you saying you have it .... it has a handle and slides out and hold about 400lbs of weight. picture? interested in swapping?

I couldnt find a 2016 with a tray - ordered one, showed up without it. Personally I think its kinda sweet to have the last year of the trail. Only that and the limited have no c pillar badging which I like a lot.

got it. yes the Tonneau Cover comes standard with all runners i think in Canada. like the hitch/ball.

Not sure if the wheels were modified other than the added black on the Off-road, but I weighed my wheels on my 2017 and they were 29 lbs. Another topic discussing Trail wheels said 33 lbs. So did Toyota lighten the wheels?

Wow I got ripped off before on my 2016 then. It didnt come with ball or tonneau cover for the Trail.

I finally bought a tonneau / cargo cover from a guy with a '16 Trail. For some odd reason I have always wanted one, they are only for privacy but also for me it looks cleaner back there now. They are only a partial cover because if the reclining rear seats. I hope it keeps the rear cleaner during the summer when I drive around with the rear window down.

one is talking about the optional sliding cargo tray that is typically only available at purchasing (factory installed option). The other is talking about the flimsy privacy cover.

I weighted them at 30.2lb. Swapped for Pro at 5lb per wheel lighter.

I highly doubt toyota reduced the weight of the trail versus off road. They look identical in shape. Just that they added some black accents inside the rim on the off road.

Oh gotcha I read too fast I thought there may be a 'second shelf' style cover. Rear deck would save a lot of dirty legs reaching in

for some reason, a number of people were bagging on the 5th Gen's sliding cargo tray when it was first released. i've always really liked mine. it's there when you need it and tucked away when you don't. it does create a choice, however: do you want to sit on the sliding tray, legs-free, or set your beverage, hands-free, in your Antman cupholders? :beer:
