TRD Oil Filter. Worth it?

Curious to see if anyone has experience with the TRD Oil Filter PTR4300079? Seems like double the price and the only benefit I see is the 'heavy duty pressure relief valve' for better cold start ups. What's the opinions on this? Worth it over the basic Toyota Filter? It's $20 on average.

20 bucks? F that... You can get a K&N oil filter for 5 bucks and it's probably as good or better

Might be worth it if you live somewhere that the cold oil would be thick... but in most places 0W20 flows pretty darn well within like the first 1 second of firing up. Heck I thought I saw a study somewhere showing it flows just by the time the engine is taking over from the starter motor, and if the car's been driven the day before, there's usually a little oil film still in the cylinders etc overnight to protect it for the 1 second before.

That said, I feel like I read in the past about some other benefits of the TRD filter... but nothing to make it twice the price or more. I think it's a rebranded filter someone else makes.

There was a guy on TW that pulled apart all the different brands of oil filters and the standard OEM Toyota filter was better than almost all of em. You’ll be fine with the OEM.

I noticed increased throttle response right away. My MPGs increased over 10%. My truck even sounds like it has an exhaust now!! It even parallel parks easier.

Heavy duty pressure relief valve? Er.....the replaceable part of a 5th gen filter is just a pleated piece of paper rolled into a cylinder.....

Last I looked K&N filters DO Not Meet or Exceed OEM specification. This is a big deal. K&N can make whatever they want to make regardless of manufacturer specs. Never buy a filter that's only attribute is "High Quality ". Oil filters must meet or exceed oem spec. K&N is great for a beater with a heater. When I do my own oil changes I typically use Napa filters. Most Napa filters are rebadged Wix filters. All Napa filters meet or exceed oem spec. Napa Gold if available.

If you're going to/want to pay a premium, I'd say go with an Amsoil EaO filter. They're expensive but I've been happy with them.

(Then again, I've never had any brand oil filter fail in any of my past vehicles.)

I use them in both my 4Runner and Camry. The TRD filters do have a better micron rating compared to the standard paper filters. This along with the metal ends give me the warm and fuzzys when I go to sleep at night.

Cold startup is typically where the engine experiences most of its wear. So if the valve helps cold-start lubrication, then it may have some value. From what I’ve read, it also helps if the filter clogs (never had that happen). Whether it’s worth an additional $10 every 10,000 miles is up to you. Would you feel better having it? Maybe its biggest benefit is in extreme cold.

TRD Oil Filters

I've used them on my FJ Cruisers. The TRD filters do have a better micron rating, so why not use them. Currently they are on National Back Order, so if you find any laying around, grab them.
