For the rear tube, I used a piece of 1 3/4” aluminum tube cut to the same length as the plastic piece it is replacing. I then machined two inserts that were the same diameter as the inside of the stock tubing. Fit them into the tube leaving about an 1 1/2” protruding. I then fit it to the stock rails, drilled through the existing holes. Tapped the inserts and threaded in a new fastener.

Agree... The new TRD pro racks are a step backwards! Check out GOBI, pricey but worth it IMO.

Agreed. I’ve looked at so many options and the Gobi rack seems to be the best looking and the most versatile. Will probably be awhile before I’m able to pull the trigger but that is on my list for sure.

I do not know about Yakima baskets, but their might mount brackets fit. I have been using them to secure my traction boards and am experimenting on mounting a plano case up there for camping gear. The ones I am using are the 23H. Amazon.com : YAKIMA, MightyMount Roof Rack Mounting System for Factory Racks, Set of 4, 23H : Yakima Mightymount : Sports & Outdoors

Not sure if that really helps, but it is at least something.

Do you have any pictures by chance? I have a pair of plano cases going on the roof for the holiday weekend. It's a shorter trip, so not too concerned with using a combination of cam and ratchet straps with loop attachments to the rails. I have a longer trip coming later this summer, so would be looking at more robust solutions for that one.

I am essentially doing what you see in the updates here:

only I am using the mighty mounts instead of drilling the rails and am running a piece of aluminum along each side of the inside of the case and putting the fasteners on top to distribute more of the force than just the 4 points touching.

I have the hardware, but just got back from a different trip and am out and in as work is making me fly again. Should have it done in a few weeks and will post an update. I don't expect an issue as the mounts are the same hardware I use for the traction boards, all be it a bit shorter bolt. Those generate much more lift up there since they have 0 weight and are just big wind catchers. I will toss them up there this weekend and try to get a pick to show.

I have used one of these since they first came out. I love it.
My wife and I use the 4runner as a tow vehicle for our 20 foot Airstream.

I have carried fire wood, water, gas cans, max tracks, etc.etc. in the Baja Basket and it works like a charm.
The basket significantly stiffens the TRD Pro factory rack structure. Usually carry "outside stuff" in the basket. Overall it works well for my needs.

That said, it is NOT a replacement for a Prinsu, Gobi, or other purpose built rack, and i would NEVER try and adapt a roof top tent to this setup.
Note: The trim fairing on the Baja Basket is removable with a small socket set and about 15 minutes.
