Did you leave it so they could find it? Don't ever settle for "We don't know." Demand a rental, tell them you guys keep it till this is fixed, get the SM involved. Just say, "My new 60k truck is making a totally unacceptable knock noise, YOUR job is to find and repair it...call me when it's done."

Unfortunately you can't pull punches with a dealer, they'll run right over you! Any resistance at all and you go straight to the SM or GM if needed. Service advisors are geared and conditioned to blow people off with noise/rattle concerns as they are time consuming, unprofitable, and no techs want them, so they do their best to shoo them away.

Hello. So my 2021 TRD PRO has had 3 FOX shocks replaced. 2 under warranty. The 3rd they paid for the shock but I had to pay the labor. Once again I have developed a clunking sound at low speed. When I’m traveling on highway or higher speeds you don’t hear it or feel it at all. Only at low speed like in parking lot or backing out of garage. You can feel it and hear it. I called fox who said that they designed them as per Toyota engineer specs. They said the problem is nitrogen leaks out since you Toyota pecs didn’t use a valve similar to tire valve to fill them with nitrogen. Fox said they would send me a kit to repair them and they would have to be refilled with nitrogen. Never received anything and never heard back from fox. Not impressed at all. I love my truck. Pushing 89000 miles in 2 1/2 years. No mechanical issues other than stupid shocks. I want to replace them. I’m looking at Eibach 2R. I want similar ride quality or better with less headaches. My 2017 TRD off-road had tociko factory shocks and never an issue. Any bombproof shock recommendations would be appreciated. Most
Y highway ride with light off-road. Anyone thinking of buying a pro get the TRD off-road and swap out suspension. Cheaper and no headaches out of the box.

I'm new here and have a 2021 4runner TRD Pro that seems to be having this same issue (with only 21,500miles!!!). I took it in to the dealer in December 2023 because I was hearing the clunking on the drivers side. The dealer replaced the drivers side shock/strut under warranty and the clunking sound went away. Fast forward to this past weekend (Nov 2024) and now I'm hearing the clunking on the passenger side. To say I'm beyond upset over this is an understatement. I read in several forums that this is a common issue in older TRD Pros and was supposedly resolved for the 2021 model year. This is apparently not the case and the issue is still ongoing. Unfortunately, my 4runner is no longer under warranty and I was shocked to find out that a new shock/strut would cost upwards of $900-$1000 + labor!!! I read in the TSB regarding this issue that both sides of the shock/struts should have been replaced at the same time, but unfortunately I was not aware of this when I had it serviced while under warranty and now I'm stuck having to repair a ridiculously overpriced shock/strut out of warranty.

What I would like to find out is if anyone knows exactly why this issue occurs and if there is a fix for it other than replacing the shock/strut for $900-$1000 + labor. If there isn't a fix, I would rather replace the garbage Toyota/Fox parts for something that isn't going to have issues everytime the weather turns cold, perhaps a Bilstein, King, or Fox aftermarket alternative that doesn't have this reliability issue.

2023 4Runner TRD Pro – Cold/Weather-Related Suspension Noise (FOX suspension)

Helo all,

I’m looking to see if anyone else has experienced this issue or has any insight.

I have a 2023 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro with the stock FOX suspension. Almost since new, we’ve noticed a suspension noise when pulling out of our driveway and hitting a small dip. The noise is most noticeable on cold mornings and seems to be worse on colder or rainy days. On warmer days, it often goes away after driving for a bit.

We’ve taken it to the dealer multiple times. They replaced the rear struts, but the noise is still there. The dealership hasn’t been able to pinpoint the source of the sound yet.

The noise feels like it’s suspension-related (creak/clunk/rub), but it’s hard to tell exactly where it’s coming from. It doesn’t really happen during normal driving—mostly during slow suspension compression like pulling out of the driveway.

Toyota is sending out a field engineer this coming Monday to inspect it, but I wanted to check here to see if:
• Anyone else with a TRD Pro / FOX suspension has experienced this
• You found the root cause (shocks, bushings, mounts, sway bar, etc.)
• There was a fix that actually worked

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
