TRD Pro springs question

I thought I read somewhere that the Trd Pro springs do not fit on the Bilstein 5100’s. Is that true? If not what shock should I go with? I just acquired some pro springs for dirt cheap and need to know what shock to get.

Correct. Regular 4R springs are 2.5” inner diameter. TRD Pro springs are 3” ID. You’ll have to find some Pro struts or get some Bilstein 6112 struts.

So the 5100 and 6112 have different body diameters? Do you know a good part number for the 6112’s? All i can find online are kits

Correct on the diameter, 6112s are wider. 5100s are narrower, and can reuse the stock OEM springs.

47-259768 is the part number for the 6112s fronts without any rears. The 6112s come with 14" 3" ID 600lb/in springs whether you plan on using them or not.

I recently bought a 2016 Pro and my head is spinning from reading all the lift posts on this forum. At the moment, below is what I was planning. Based on above, the Bilstein 5100s won't work with the FJ Pro springs (14"x3", 600 lbs).

Plan:
FJ TRD Pro coils ($100 each), which should give me 1-2” lift. Also 600lb vs 520lb now. Bilstein 5100 Adj Height, which is 0-2.5” ($225 pair). That should allow me to dial in the front lift to about 2.5” total (above stock or Pro?). From my research, that should work with stock UCAs, diff, etc. In the future when I add the winch bumper, I can re-adjust the bilsteins to get 2.5” again. If UCA angles are wonky, I can deal with it then. Same with dif drop, although the diff drop kit looks pretty simple. On a similiar note, the 1”toytec bodylift looks pretty easy as well. If I need some clearance after the suspension lift, it might be a good option.

After the FJ Pro coils and Bilstein 5100s, I will have to evaluate the back and see how much lift I need to keep it level. The options I have seen are springs and spacers. I would prefer springs, unless it’s just like ½”. Hopefully I can keep the same shocks for now, but if need longer travel, I would probably get bilsteins with reservoir to match the look now.

Any thoughts?

The FJ coils and all other 3" ID will not fit on 5100s. The 5100s are too narrow.

Why are you putting 5100s in the front on a 2016 TRD Pro? Stock pre-2019 TRD Pro suspension in the front should be the TRD equivalent of the 6112s without the additional perch settings. You could swap out the front coil on your current shock, but the TRD version doesn't have the 7 perch settings that the 6112s have for height adjustment.

Also keep in mind that with 5100s, or with the 6112s, you cannot "dial" in on an exact lift height. Your height options are limited to the different perch settings that you sit the springs on, you cannot fine tune the lift height. Changing the perch setting to adjust lift height involves disassembling the unit and moving the little piece that the coil sits on to a different location. The 5100s in front have 4 perch settings for height adjustment, and the 6112s have 7 perch settings.

This is my first 4runner, so just learning about the suspension. I have the 5100s Adj on my Tundra and they have been great. I was ready to order the 5100s. This thread definetely saved me some time. I understand that it isn't exact height.

The Bilstein 6112 Adjs only come with the springs? Just the shocks without springs aren't available? Anything else I need to install them?

Guess I should have researched a little more before buying the Pro springs. Sure wish they would sell the 6112’s without springs. Oh well, guess I’ll go a different direction.

I'm still confused why you are trying to downgrade your TRD pro with lesser shocks.

The 6112s do come with the shocks and a pair of 14" 3" ID 600 lb/in springs as part of the kit, and the kit comes with all you technically need to have them installed. You do have to re use some of the hardware on your OEM shocks for part of top plate assembly thing. There are some vendors, I know Wheeler does this, that sell 6112s with additional set of hardware so that the vendor can mount the coils on to the shocks for you before they ship them out. That way you don't have to deal with spring compressors and those extra steps of the install, you don't have to disassemble your old set and you can just throw on the new ones after you take the old ones off.

I know, this is an old thread, but I'm looking to acquire some trd pro springs off a 2020 with about 3k miles. If the 5100's don't work, what shocks will work? Any other brands work?

Nothing. Those springs are made for a specific shock and that's it.

There is zero point in buying just the springs.

Buy a properly matched shock and spring.

Thanks for the info. I should have done a bit more research ahead of time. I didn't realize they wouldn't work with other shocks. I thought it was all interchangeable.

They might work with another big body strut but you will need to verify width, length, and then also consider fit between spring and shock, which is a big deal.

The other thing is that all the big body front ones come as assembled coilovers or at least paired with springs; I cannot think of any that come just as struts as the small dm ones typically do.
