TRD Supercharger and towing

I tow a 7000 lb boat+trailer around with my '03 4runner v8 and definitely am at the limit for the truck. Some hills have my engine struggling.

I'm not even going to go into the mildly alarming yanking the trailer does to the rear underway ;)

What do you think, would the supercharger solve the power towing problems or hasten the demise of my engine/tranny?

Dumb question, but have you tried looking into a Hypertech chip or some sort of computer chip enhancer programmer? that has got to be easier and cheaper than a supercharger....

I haven't looked at chips because unless a car or truck is turbo/supercharged they are not cost effective. Unless it is an illegal chip you'll only get like 10-20 hp out of it, all at the very top of the range.

Chips on turbo/supercharged engines make a BIG difference, but my 4Runner is normally aspirated.

Drop in a K&N filter and add a cat-back exhaust. That should be good for about 10-15HP and 30ft/lb.

I can't think of anything else that will offer major improvements.

I'm not asking about any other improvements - I am asking about trd supercharger performance.

Anybody have any experience in this area?

Thanks :)

Well so far its OK - I upgraded the hitch and the trailer is a high-end dual axle adjusted for 500 lbs tongue weight.

Still no supercharger info on this supercharger thread...funny ;)

Has TRD released the supercharger yet? If not, this question is merely a hypothetical.

The V8 in the 4Runner is capable of being blown, while retaining the long life it is known for. The same can be said for the Toyota 5 speed automatic. (I have been looking into this issue for some time now.) The TRD supercharger adds about 50% to the horsepower and torque. I'll bet those numbers would make you satisfied. However, Ford has a new Stuper Duty turbo-diesel out that would make fast work of your towing issues.

TRD Supercharger: +75HP and +75Torque.

that should give you more than enough to tow that boat of yours.

I saw a bunch of places that have the SC listed and priced, haven't called but thought that indicated some availability.

If not I guess I won't hear from anyone that has it ;)

Thanks for the responses so far, everyone!

If you find some NOS kits around, please let us know.

What you really need is too change the gears in the front and rear(if you have 4wd).
A lower gear will give you quite a bit more torque for the hills.

If you notice that highway cruising you are under 2000 rpm. Raising the gear ratio(more gear reduction)
at least 10% will not hardly affect your mileage and will really help on the hills.
It won't hurt the motor to run a a little higher RPM. Maybe 4.1 to 4.3, I haven't
looked up to see what ratios are available.

None of the aftermarket gimicks will do anything, but take your money.

If you can get a S/C make sure the ECU is sorted for no pinging.
It will help a lot with your pulling power, however you will probably be wise to add a tranny cooler.

You should be fine as long as you have no pinging and a additional tranny cooler.
