TRD Supercharger

So I'm sure there is someone smart here who can tell me why the 4.0L FJ Cruiser engine has a TRD supercharger but our 4.0L 4Runner engine doesn't?

I had the 3.4L TRD Supercharger on my older Tacoma back in the days and I loved it. Wondering what the aftermarket holds for us 5GEN 4Runners.

Look in the engine bay, honestly I don't think theirs enough room for one. But I did hear somewhere that URD is working on some kind of supercharger for the 5th gens.

I really hope TRD or even URD comes out with a positive displacement roots type blower for this new variant of the 1GR-FE. It would be great for us who drive at altitude and I really feel that the 5th gen chassis could handle more power comfortable.

A supercharged Trail Edition? Yes please!

Its not as simple as it being the same engine so it should have one. The 4runner will need a whole different TRD reflash than the FJ, and I assume that would take some time to perfect.

I'm sure it would. When the 3.4L TRD supercharger came out on the Tacoma's it was a PITA to get tuned properly. Tons of pinging issues for people, computer upgrades, etc but at the end of the day, TRD finally tuned it to the point where it worked well and they obviously have a demand for them since they are still selling 12 yrs later.

I'm patient, but I'm hoping that TRD has something in the works because I could really use some more power under the hood. I passed up on the 2011 Jeep GC for this and my biggest disappointment has been the HP/TQ and towing. A supercharger would fix both of these. :thumb3:

well while youre waiting you could pick up some DT headers.

Good to know.......just saw Harpers post. Looks like they are a PITA to install. I had to laugh when I took my Tacoma to Toyota to have the TRD Headers installed. They said 3 hrs to install (9 hrs later) they finally got them installed.

I'll wait until a few others install these headers before I dive into it, especially since Harper didn't seem to have too much of a "wow" factor in his response as to the performance he experienced.

I may just wait for TRD as many others are.........only time will tell.

In 2010 Toyota started using a different version of the 1GR-FE engine in the FJ and 4Runner. This new version has new cylinder heads and dual VVTi. It does run very nicely.

Unfortuneately, the supercharger systems from URD and TRD will not fit on the engine. URD is definately is pushing forward with a nice supercharger system for the new engine and I have heard TRD is looking it to it also.

The one thing that puzzels me is that Toyota is making two version of this engine. The old version that is appearently going to be continued to be used in teh Tacoma and Tundra for a few more years and the newer version that is only in the FJ and 4Runner.

In the mean time URD has two different header version for the new engine as well as our popular URD MAF Sensor Calibrator. More stuff is in the works as well.

The new engine has a 10.4:1 compression ratio, right? (And the previous version had a 10:1 or so?) Either way, isn't that a bit high to be pumping forced induction into? Seems like you'd want to back off to maybe 9:1 to make the motor 100% safe with forced induction, especially since so many people will want to get that supercharger for towing. I dunno, I guess I'm sort of traditional when it comes to forced induction. I like to see nice, safe low compression ratios with boost. I'm too nervous after seeing so many blown up motors with boost and high compression. :)

I guess that leads to my next question: Will URD be making a full supercharger kit which includes lower compression pistons, forged internals, etc? That would be amazing (and amazingly expensive)! :)

Figured you'd show yourself today after emailing ya last night. Good chatting with you, it's been forever. I'll have to swing by MD sometime to play catch up.

The compression ratio is perfectly fine.

If you drop it down that low you will loose a lot of power and will need to be in boost all the time to make power.

You do not need to install all kinds of expensive internal engine parts just to run boost. Our current supercharger for the 1GR has more than doubled the stock power on a completely stock engine.

Just FYI, the Tundra got the new 1GR-FE for the 2011 model year. The Tacoma is the only Toyota available in the US with the old 1GR, which is still assembled at Toyota's Alabama plant. They must be importing the new 1GR from Japan for the V6 Tundras.

BTW Really it was URD who got the TRD kit for the 3.4L running well. Also the man posting about the new possibilities for the new 1GR-FE.

Still in the works

Sorry to bump an old thread but I am very interested in a supercharger for a 2011 T4R. URD doesn't seem to have anything for the 5th gen other than a long and shorty header (I'm buying the shorty).

Any news would be welcome.

thanks

From what I heard from Gadget he is putting on prototype parts now and testing. He is working hard to get it done by the FJ Summit in Ouray. That happens on July 20th! I am keeping my fingers crossed that he has something done by then. In any case, its in the works, just be patient, and get your checkbook ready :)

Gadget's got the prototype URD Supercharger!

I can't tell from the pictures, but does the prototype carry a low enough profile to hit under the hood of a SR5/LE? Looks like to TE hood may be needed.
