Hi there,

Does anybody have a supercharger installed on a 4th gen 4Runner? My brother has the TRD Supercharged Tacoma and it is pretty nice. Any idea on cost? performance?

Thanks!

the V6 and V8 are different, IIRC there is a S/C for the V6, but not the V8.
Toyota use to make one for the V8, but it kept snapping rods, they they discontinued it, there is a guy on here i think that had the V8 with a S/C but sold his rig.
I know this doesnt help much, but its all I had, lol

You'll need an FJ fit kit and a EMS (like a map2 or 3 or a pro efi depending on how much you wanna spend and go) to tune it. Remember we have no TRD support here.

I've tried the search bar and there are threads for other generations and discussions about a 4th gen SC but I haven't found a post where someone has actually installed it and gave feedback. Will continue to search.

go to advanced search and click on 4th gen section, that should help you.

i think trd did not offer the 4runner kit because the hood wouldn't close. but if you're willing to use the FJ kit and modify the hood then ur gold!!! maybe you'll need a FJ ECU too ..... but the FJ kit should provide all the mechanical components you need.

4th Gen TRD supercharger

Hi all,

New to the forum.
I do have a 2003 4.7L 4runner with TRD supercharger. I had it installed about 5 years ago when I had about 40k miles on the car. Now, after 65k miles with the supercharger, there is so far no major issue.

The car is running great. Definitely the best aftermarket performance mod that you can get. I believed situations with rod bending/blowing is when people start changing pulley size to up the boost or adding nos.

The 2 main issue I had was after initial installation of the supercharger, the serpentine belt kept fraying after few months. After swapping 2 belts within a 6 months period, I emailed TRD and they recommended to add the pulley shim kit. Since then, been without any further belt problem.

The second issue is recently noticed there is a leak from the nose drive of the supercharger. From reading online and info from Gadget (Toyota performance mod expert) realized that the nose drive will need to be change probably every 60-80k miles with replacement of lubricating oil inside nose drive.

TRD still have the entire nose drive assembly kit which cost about $220. Took 2 days (few hours/day) for my buddy and I to take out the supercharger and change the nose drive. Now the supercharger is running smooth.

Overall, my experience with the TRD supercharger is excellent.

I got mine 5 years ago, brand new for $3k when one of the California dealer was trying to get rid of their supply.

If you can get one, you can pretty much fit into (2000-2004)4.7L tundra, (2003-2004)4runner, (2001-2004)Sequoia. You just need to get unichip and have a shop program it.

I initially ran the supercharger with TRD ecu but since I had an unichip laying around, I took to a local shop and had them tuned it for my 4runner with supercharger. It ran way more smoother than the TRD ecu.

Hope this give you some idea. PM me if you have more question.

You are welcome.

What year is your 4runner? The existing 4th gen TRD supercharger can only work with 2003-04 4runner (non VVTi engine).

If yours' is after 2004, then you should be looking into what URD will ultimately offer.

Here is a thread from Gadget:

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/89138-gadgets-2006-4runner-4x4-sport-v6.html

The dyno is just a beast. 355 rwhp probably translate to 460 hp at the flywheel given there is more driveline power lost with 4x4.

Good luck to you in your quest for force induction. :zoom:
