TRD Tundra Fronts Vs. Toytec Ultimate CO's

Let's compare... I'm debating on swapping my Tundras for some C/O's for a touch more lift up front...

School me gentlemen...

Let's try to keep this one as "on topic" as possible. I'd really like to hear what each side has to say, as far as on road ride, off road performance, and any issues anyone has had with either.

Let's let this thread be the official compare and reveiw thread....

And remember, ON TOPIC, :jump: please...

And here's my response from another board wher I posted this topic...

I got around 2.5-2.75" of lift and I still have a good bit of rake, even with the bumper and sliders. I wish someone near me would swap front coils for a while so I could test them out. I get like zero articulation up front... And the ride is pretty harsh...

i don't think to many of us on here run the trd fronts, and most seem pleased with the coil overs, personally i haven't ridden in either so can't make any real comment, just what i've noticed in passing on this board, i do think the coil overs will be better all around as the springs are properly load rated for our trucks as opposed to the tundra one's not, really you need to tell us what you think the draw backs are of your tundra lift and then compare that to the draw backs of someone running the coil overs

I would compare my ride with the toytecs just a little more stiff that stock. I have the standard spring rate, 600 lb Eibach/Toytec coils. I get poor articulation too, but I always thought that was just a drawback of ISF.

Maybe we could get some front articulation pics to compare.

~~~ Via "Ric" With the ToyTecs...
Mine does nothing anywhere close to this.
Yes, didn't think about that. That still won't affect the harsh-ness of the fronts over bumps. I know that this is a lifted vehicle. I know that it's not going to be a Cadillac-like feel. But with the added weight of the ARB the front should absorb "some" of the dips. It's harsh. Like riding on stilts up front.
actually having the sway bar disconnected will improve ride quality because there is less road feel being tranfered to the frame of the truck and it allows the IFS to cycle smoother.
I have the tundra coils (on ome n91s struts). Overall for my style of driving I like them. They are certainly firm and some would say a little harsh, but if I switched to a 'comfort' shock I'm sure that would make a big improvement. Street cornering and high speed stability is excellent, especially with the ARB up front. Off road the suspension compression is poor. It really takes a lot get to full compression. I have not disconnected my front sway bars, so that also works against it.
It really is hard to get the perfect set up. Terrain varies so much and what might be good at one point will be bad just around the corner. I don't do much technical crawling around here, mostly mud, ruts and steep hills, so the extra front end stability with the firm coils works well. I'm not bouncing over everything. Front end dip under brakes is minimal so I don't loose ground clearance either.
In this pic, i'm sure softer coils would have allowed more drivers side front compression and helped reduce the rear droop and keep the tire on the ground, but the firm set up did allow me to approach the rock faster without loosing control from excessive rebound...
I cant comment on any other lift other than the Toyteclifts coil-over, had them on my 99 and absolutely LOVED them, loved the ride on and off road, flexed great, as you see, Kregg posted a pic I did not have the sway connect.
I loved the ride, the quaility, the flex so much, when I got the 04, within a week, I had the ultimate kit on it, lol
as far as the flex on the 04:
and yes, the front swaybar is removed, the rear swaybar is still attached.
This kit works AWSOME for what type of wheeling I do, more rock crawling, daily driving, I dont do high speed stuff.
I'm liking what I'm hearing on the ToyTecs. What about maintainence, I know Steve pushed the "rebuild" issues on coil-overs, and that was another reason I was sold on his kit. Anyone care to address? I won't be hitting any dunes down here in Alabama, so... :)
are you planning on adding anymore additional weight like a winch and/or heavy duty skid plates? I have an ARB with a winch up front and my 882's actually ride pretty nice. If you plan on adding those items, i know the tundra coils are supposed to be pretty similar to the 882's which would actually "soften" the ride up.
I love my toytec ultimate kit! Ride feels great I notice a little harsh when I switched tires from 265/75/16 nitto terra graplers load c, to 255/85/16 toyo mt load D. But this I already knew it was going to happen. I get alot of flex will post pics when I get home. Hopes this helps, also I am running the tires at 35psi.
what did Steve mention about the rebuild?
I don't remember exactly what was said per our conversation, as that was over a year ago. I do remember that it'd be hassle having to tear the truck down to rebuild the C/o's, it'd put me out of a truck for a while and finding someone to do it, spending the money... etc...
AFAIK, rebuilding the C/O is basically the same process on both of them. i'm not sure exactly what parts would be replaced but i assume it would just mean a shock replacement which is either exactly the same, or just slightly different between the 2. the process for replacing the shock on ours is: compress the spring and remove the top plate, take the spring off and pull the adjusting collars off and put everything on the new shock.
the differences on the Toytec vs the TRD Tundra are
different spring
different shock valving (i believe)
threaded body vs. c clip
custom top plate with a flex joint
PS..were you talking to doug yesterday or was that a different chris?
Same Chris. :frog:
I will start off by saying that I do not have Toytec coilovers, nor have I seen them. I have had coilovers on other cars. The difference in a coilover and a shock is that you actually disassemble and rebuild a CO. This can not usually be done in a driveway and have to be sent out to a service that will rebuild and recharge them. A set of shocks/struts you remove and replace.
Thats what I had thought too..
