thanks guys lol. sorry if my comment about mr Leary and the operator error was taken as an attack towards him, i was more attacking that mind set in general. and no i can not prevent you or anyone from buying retreads. but if asked i would advise any of my friends or any one who asked my opinion on them to go another route if possible..
tires do have a life expectancy and that is generally with in 8 years now i know a lot of tires that get used with in that time period and probably with in half that time period. then there are also some(all be it a far less amount) that dont get used up in that time) and then yet still others that just plan every day are not taken care of, run a lower psi, over loaded, driven hard ect. these are the tires i am afraid of... casue unless the tire was run a really low psi there will be no signs of damage (i run my 85 pick up at 21psi up front and 19 in the rear, and have done so for over a year while i dont drive it all that much i did forget(more of an overlook) that i run them so low and put a yard and a half of 3/4- wet crushed rock in the back and drove it across town, and you can not tell by looking at the tire its been mistreated like i did. i just had america tire replace my valve stems from fixed metal to flexible rubber so i dont rip them off out wheeling and asked them how the inside of the tire looks, and or if there was any damage, they said no it looks brand new -the tires are two plus years old and sit most of the time as its a 2nd vehicle(i told them that i had aired down to go wheeling but didnt tell them about the monster load i hauled with it) its this kinda of action and tires that i would not want to be retreaded

Is it just me, or does every Treadwright discussion turn into a stat re-hash and explanation of what retreads are?
For the OP, I own Treadwrights and love em as my daily driver to work and my daughter's preschool. I've recommended them to friends and plan to get another set when it's time to replace them.

Man I love the look of these old trucks. It makes want one so bad. Or rather I want a 1st gen 4runner so that I can take the topper off and cruise around semi-convertible like in the summers.

I have the 265/75-16 Guard Dogs. I bought 5 tires shipped to my work $580. Took them to Firestone and they charged $22 a tire to mount and balance. So $690 total for 5.
The mechanic at FS knew they were retreads by looking at them. He had never seen light truck retread. He had no problem with mounting them. They said nothing about having balance issues. Actually they asked me a bunch of questions about them and thought I got a great deal.
Do I know how much weight it took to balance them? Nope, haven't paid attention to the weights on them and I don't care. I've had them up to 80mph and no vibes at all.
I did a lot of searching before buying and besides this landcruiser thread being brought up now the only failures I saw online with pics was a guy with an xterra that got a bulge in the tread. He emailed a pic to TW and they sent him a new tire.
I have a wife and daughter and feel just as safe in my runner as any of my other cars. Treadwright has been around a while and before that they were Hi-tec and after searching that I found no negative reviews. If there was a problem with their product I think they would have been out of business a long time ago. Just my opinion of course...

Yeah I knew that this thread would become an argument, but that is why I made it. I wanted to move the conversation from the other guys thread and into its own. I feel like most people against just restate that they are old carcasses and failures on semi trucks. There were some good points by the kid, but nothing that would change my mind. I have seen no reason to not run these tires and the occasional failure can be a multitude of reasons as Mr. Leary and NelsonMD explained.
Thanks for the response and reassurance from another dad. I will be getting a set of the 265/75 Wardens this summer. If I don't like them then I will sell them and maybe lose a little bit of money, but I will know that I at least tried them out. I expect to be very happy and will put the extra money towards new rims. :cheers:

i would be open to run them on a wheeler, and maybe after seeing for myself and experiencing and talking with tread wright on how they chose their carcasses ect. i might go with a set for a daily driver but i am so skeptical -i know i said i would never ever run them or recommend them, but i cant be that stubborn, never say never... call me doubting thomas, but im the kinda person who would have to see long term personal usage first...

I'm hoping my set of 285/75 Wardens takes me from my current 145k miles to 200k miles. I'll definitely keep an update of the tires and write several reviews as the miles/time progress.

I wish you the best of luck, but I doubt that you will get as much mileage out of the Warden as a brand new TA KO.

Yeah, I have no clue how the compound will compare to BFG's original recipe. But even if I just get 35K out of them, I'll be happy. We'll see!

I just got my tires! Wow, that was fast. They said it might be 5-7 weeks, but my BFG A/T style 285/75R16's just showed up. :thumb3:

I recently went through this entire scenario about getting the TW and based on the price was gonna get 5 so I had the spare. Then it seemed everytime I was gonna do it they were 'unavailable' and no backorder allowed etc...
Meanwhile I was collecting parts for my lift and ended up doing my lift on a random weekend becuase I could. My pizza cutter 265s looked ridiculous after, plus I had tire that was going bad with a slow leak that was pissing me off. I ended up at Les Schwab and got the Maxxis Bighorn for $1100 (285s) with warranty/lifetime balance/rotate and got the aligment for free (if you mention yelp they give you a free alignment with purchase of 4 tires). I had the money and was impaitent so this is the route I took.
If I was more paitent and in hindsight, I should have picked up a pair of thrasher rims here somewhere and bought 2 sets of TW. A set of the Guard Dogs for mudding/trail riding and a set of the Warden ATs for the daily stuff. Would have been about the same price.
Robert, good luck with these, I'm sure they will work out well for you. If these things were killing people everyday there would be a big controversy over it. Look what happened to Firestone and Ford in the late 90's early 00's.
