Trip to the mountains… Snow Tires (not really)

If I ever get to the mountains where it is snowing, it’s usually this time of year, and it had been a while since I had to worry about snow traction. Not sure if it’s going to be dumping out in Mammoth, just trying to prepare for the trip.

I have yet to test either one in snow, between a set of P load Cooper AT3s or 3 Ply BFG Mud Terrains, which do you think would generally perform better?

I really prefer to not have to run out and buy new tires for the trip… I know it’s probably the right choice, but they would sit around the garage and never get used.

You generally want to see a lot of siping for traction on snow, so the AT3s should be a lot better than a MT.

Functionally I would go with the AT3s.

I work in Truckee around Donner Pass and I have General Grabber ATX all-terrains on my T4R. It has the three-peak mountain snowflake endorsement and I haven't had any issues going up and down grades with fresh powder, slush, and ice.

While a tire for your situation is important, it is also important to remember that driving sensibly in adverse conditions will compliment the tire performance.
