Trouble programming keyless entry remote

Hi everyone,

I just purchased a 2000 4Runner and am trying to program an ebay remote that I purchased (code 1512Y).

I followed the instructions on the forum (don't have the link handy), but after I did the "press lock and unlock" simultaneously, then press lock for 2 seconds step, the door locks cycled automatically.

According to the instructions, this is supposed to mean that it accepted the remote. They cycled 2-3 times I think; it was a few.

However, the remote doesn't do anything when I try to lock/unlock the doors.

Could the battery in the remote be bad? I noticed my, I guess, "actuators" are bad because I had to manually move the driver's lock a few times in the process. Could this be an issue?

Also, I wanted to mention that it has the VIP Toyota alarm but is an SR5.

Only the Limited models have the security key in the key itself right?

My key has a black head and a slot all the way across the top so it doesn't have a chip in it from what I gather.

Make sure you have the fresh battery,
Try this
1. Start with the following conditions: you are in the vehicle

a. Key is out of the ignition
b. Drive door is open ( all other doors are closed)
c. Driver door is unlocked (other door locks don't matter)

2. Insert the key into the ignition (don't turn it) and pull it out.

3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Cycle the power locks 5 times. Use an even pace and try
to go relatively fast.

b. Close, then open the drivers door.

4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Cycle the power locks 5 times (same as before).
b. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF.
c. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF.
d. Remove the key from the ignition.

5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should cycle (automatically)
indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1
if the locks do not cycle at this point.

6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Press the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter
simultaneously for 1 second.

b. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons,
press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds.
Within 3 seconds, the door locks should cycle ( LOCK then
UNLOCK) once-- indicating successful programming. If
the door locks don't cycle, or cycle twice. Repeat steps
6a and 6b--this remote has not been accepted.

c. Repeat steps 6a and 6b for EACH transmitter that will
operate the vehicle. Including any old transmitters.

7. Close the driver door.

I tried this but after the second cycle the driver side button will quit going down. Does that mean there is some thing messed up in the door locking mechanism ?

Try this. I had issues programming my remote and this fixed it.

Yes my friend it helped me. I came across your post and saw that you had to go to 5 cycles of the ignition to get into option 5 of the programming mode in order to clear out all of the memory and then start over by going back into option one.

I tried everything and this is what did it for me. I first entered the programming mode by going to option 5 ( cycling the ignition 5 times ) then I started over again and when I enetred the programming mode I only cycled the key once. Once I was in that first mode I did the button clicking on the remote and it worked perfectly. It took them both, one right after the other.

I think the biggest thing here is that people need to be aware that how many times you turn the ignition before you remove it determines what mode you are in. I am not sure the exact differences between these modes except for what was listed but doing option 2 ( turning ignition twice ) did not work for me. Either way, my Runner is happy and so am I! Now I will go drink a bottle of Anchor Steam or maybe a Shiner Bock and walk around with my chest puffed out! LOL
