what is the brand name on the sunroof? i ask because therewas a recall on some deaLER INSTALLED SUNROOFS.

Also, with factory-installed sunroofs, the little pop-up wind visor adjusts itself once you hit a certain speed. From http://www.toyoland.com/trucks/4runner.html:

"The full height of the moonroof deflector will lower to an intermediate height when the vehicle is traveling over 55 MPH, and raise to full height again when the vehicle speed drops below 45 MPH and the roof is fully open."

Maybe this is what you're hearing?

Hey thanks Chaz...the 3rd link is what my sunroof is doing I guess...it just makes a loud clicking so idk it's weird

Be careful with your's.

Mine has rattled and made sounds since day one and it's a Toyota Sunroof. It just stuck itself open a week or two back and costed $560.00 to have it closed and the switch disconnected. The whole system is apparently in need of replacement for $2,560.00 I'll keep a glass roof for the rest of the life of the truck. It's an '03 SE

Oh great that's not what unwanted to hear...did you take it to a Toyota dealer? It makes that loud clicking sound when i just tilt it the roof open...I wonder if it's a recall issue that was never fixed by the previous owner?

I've recently experienced the same issue Paulie describes. It's worked fine since I bought my 2004 SR5 a year ago, but last weekend it started to not shut and would make a loud clicking/grinding sound from the side of the plastic wind deflector as it shut. It sounds almost as if a gear is stuck or something isn't catching properly. The sunroof got stuck in the open position, but I was able to shut it with a few minutes of tinkering. Tried it again yesterday and it worked better, but it still makes me nervous.

I love having a sunroof ... but not enough to spend $2,500 to get it fixed.

Yes I took it to a local Toyota dealer here in New Orleans. I'm not big on outside mechanics working on my cars.

My father was the previous owner since day one of ownership and we took it in many times over the sunroof rattle all they did was jam a bunch of grease in the tracks.

I have the truck since my Dad passed away.

I had the same cracking noise where the automatic open and close wouldn't work and I would have to cycle through to get it working again by holding the button. I just dealt with it for awhile and thought it just had to be reset. After just dealing with it for many months it finally got stuck in the open position one day. I luckily was still under warranty and brought it in to the dealer. They said it was the motor and replaced it. I had to bring it in a second time to the same dealer because the cracking noise appeared again within a couple of days. After the second time it still came back not fixed so I brought it in to their sister dealer to see if the techs there could fix it. They told me the motor cables were in the way and were getting chewed up. It's been over a year now and it's as good as new. I'm guessing the cracking was because the cables were interfering with the tracks.
